Grrl Power #84 – Double dog dare ya to open it
I’ve said in the past that the reveal is “soon,” well, now I can say it without the quotes. I’m sure Maxima would claim that she was intentionally trying to maneuver Sydney into opening the tube, but it’s really just both of their personalities clashing and the sparks are flying. Something’s got to give.
I like how Arianna is leaning into the frame in panel 8. That’s got to be weird looking from Sydney’s point of view, she just tipped over in her chair to interject something.
Reader Doc Savage suggested I name the General after Peter Falk, which I liked since I’ve been watching a lot of Columbo while I draw. Of course I managed to misspell his last name in the dialog and in the bio, but oh well. It’s more original now.
Oh and if you’re interested, Angela Melick does one of my favorite webcomics, Wasted Talent, which is a cutely drawn and funny autobio comic. Just thought I’d mention it cause her second book is out. She pimps it in a video here.
We know the tube contents are plural, obviously powerful, hard to explain, fit in a poster tube, and big enough to require a sizable container. They are hiding, but not very cleverly. Their attachment to Sydney is deep, powerful, and peculiar. Live pixies?
,The vorpal sword originated in Lewis Carrol’s poem Jabberwocky., particularly the lines
“One two, one two, and through and through,
the vorpal blade went snickersnack!
he left it dead and with its head,
He went galumphing back”
A flamboyant (wavy) blade shape that magically changed the direction of the waves during the swing might account for some of the extreme cutting power of a vorpal sword, and would account for the offset mentioned by Darknesse above.
You basically described the Kris. A favorite dagger blade because of the length of the blade edge vs the length of the actual knife, as well as the…interesting wound tract it left.
Almost. A kris remains the same shape. Imagine a kris with a wave pattern that magically changed direction, going from. say, up down up down up to down up down up down and back a dozen times per second. That’s beyond any technology I know of, but vorpal swords are magical, and that action would have the effects described, even the odd sound effect.
Kris are the best known flamboyant blades, but certainly not the only ones. There are examples all around the world, ranging from small daggers to five foot plus two handed swords.
The reason for the kris’s wavy pattern is because any injury caused by said blade would be uneven, making it harder to heal, even with stitches (which would be difficult to make to say the least), increasing the chance of infection or of permanent crippling/maiming due to the way the scar would form. this also makes the wound bleed out more, increasing the chance of an outright kill, and the sawing effect of the blade allows for deeper cuts.
For it is not what is in the tube (and the hammer space within), but the tube itself >:)
again u beat me to it. may the nerve weasle become your room mate.
DaveB – looking ahead a few weeks (month? Months?)
I assume Sydney is going to have to go through a basic class on Military Law, Behavior and Decorum as expected and applies to Supers of ARC? As well as a basic class on power control, power classifications, and power stunts?
In the first, I think the instructor will be reduced to tears and Sydney will look smug- the rest of the newbie recruits in the class will look upon her with a mixture of shock and awe. Maybe the Ninja-Nun in back will have passed out while holding her power focus cross (she was going to work with the team’s chaplain- recruited for healing/miracles and warding vs evil powers? Plus she has a stealth field, a shush field and minor telepathic control/weak unless a believer then very strong. “BEHAVE!”) – That’s what can start that panel. Sydney walking in and “EAAAAARGH! NINJA NUNS THEY ARE REAL — fill in many strangely adjacent and colorful adjectives and explicatives.
Next row of panels- sydney in ARC Cafeteria daring the Oriental/Philipino Cook to try to make her sweat. (have him use hot bean paste too. Yeah it does have that “other” side effect too. o.0 )
After medics come and remove instructor and Ninja-Nun, Sydney heads to the other class. A few veterans are there to show off and impress the newbies. They start the lecture. Sydney looks bored after their display and lecture. (multi-panel montage?)
They call on her to do better and call her a rookie. Sydney’s demon/succubus chibi on her shoulder just grins or tries to wave off warn the others. She gives them a grin that should leave em with chills. (those that saw the live tv stream start to move out of the way.)
Batman sound balloon montage/barrage. Reveal panel shows the cocky male hanging from wall with a major atomic wedgie (he may be nigh invulnerable, but that doesn’t cover this happening. And tidbits and softer parts are notoriously prone to having a lower armor/defense rating even on supers.
So what if they have a force field. The underwear doesn’t (that will be rectified (pun not intended) asap. Neh?) usually- thus she can grab that with her powers or hands and lift/fly and use their own weight/mass against them.
Another pair look down at the woman with even more curves than we’ve seen so far in other supers (hinting that she’s indeed powerful according to comic lore so far.) who’s on ground (face down) covering/clutching her rear. Blurb over that, “I dunno what a ‘Powah Kancho’ is, but I definitely never want it to happen to me.” The other one anime style nods her head up and down rapidly w/anime sweat/distress drop at temple. (google “Kancho” and “Kancho no-jutsu” (for the naruto version) if you don’t know what it is. (I’m betting you do, already. But it’s usually funny enough to go looking again.)
Sydney can look smug and be leaning in a corner.
Then her guts (not her stomach) protest the cafeteria food she wolfed down.
She looks distressed and surprised (and very worried.)
Cut to outside the security doors and we just hear… “PFFFfifffle!” Then silence…then “Wasn’t me!”
Then biohazard alarms go off.
Cut to the General looking at the repair bills in one hand, medical bills in middle, and food/request purchases in his other.
He looks at Max and asks “Is this really a wise idea to keep her around? It’s only been three days/or a week.” (however the comic timeline works out to be.)
Someone off panel , in soto-voice can mutter “WE can always send her to the enemy camp as a trojan horse. Just make sure her bag are full of XXXXXX (what ever it was she ate that caused the bio-alarms and huge sick call after.)”
I quit claim these ideas and pass them to you. I’d have done it in email, but I lack that for you and my muse made me write this outline/idea down immediately. I gotta get back to writing about rednecks and zombies now.
Show sixty batman style “bim” “Baf” “Booms”
I thought DaveB might get a kick out of this. Ever wonder what Maxima would look like rendered in the third dimension? (And before you ask “Why is her mentor Batman?” I’ve ran 5 characters through wonder woman’s mentor storyline, it gets quite boring, and I don’t get to lay the smack down on the Joker through WW :P) Also, if DaveB wants to use his creation, all he has to do is leave me a message and I will delete her, so he can have his way…I mean play with her.

Chrome body, gold tint, wavy hair, biker glasses and gloves.
Damn, regular player I see:P.
PS3 servers but yeah I mess around with it. :P
Come play on the PC side, we have cookies! (and now that dcuo is f2p, everyone can!) And maybe if I get some cash going, I’ll spring for a month of legendary and create Archon (or ArcSwat, if that’s taken). Then David can have a league full of groupies at his beck and call :P.
My pc can barely handle flash games, much less any decent MMO :(
Hah, that’s the first thing I did in City of Heroes and DC online. You can make a decent look alike, but the power options are so limited that you can’t really make any of my characters.
Theres a champions online option. Free range powersets. Least they were when they started, free-to-play has skewed my memories.
Well, I have my maxima hooked up with electric powers, will be getting her super strength at lvl 10 ( I do it on all characters, i just love throwing buses, I imagine em full of screaming nuns), and since she hasn’t been seen with any other powers than flight, electricity (promo/pinups), and super strength, I can’t really go any further than that.
OMG! I just found this comic and spent the last 2 hours reading the archive. I have not laughed this hard since i was 5. I probably woke the neighbors, its 3AM. Pure Gold, I mean the comic not Maxima. Recommending this to everyone I know.
Welcome aboard.
You’ll find that if you reread it you will discover new and quirky things you might of missed the first read through. Enjoy the experience and tell others.
And always look at the border of the comic, Dave goes through alot of trouble for those little jokes. ;)
Hey great! It’s good to know I have 2 hours worth of archives now. Glad you like it.
I have been delving through the archives for quite some time (because I can’t *not* read the comments). Many, many, hours thus far.
I come back to catch up on the comic on the ONE DAY that there’s a hugenormous cliffhanger that will actually bug me until the next comic comes out. >.< Just my luck.
I'm seriously impressed with how well-developed this is. Grrl Power is high on my list of favourites, and that list is fairly long.
Hmm just realized something this update is dangerously close to April fools.. please don’t do something evil, resist the temptation
…No comic? ;_;

Dont forget to vote every day guys and gals! :)
That last sentence… the syntax… Have you been reading Homestuck lately?
Hmm, don’t think I’ve ever read that one.
You don’t know about Homestuck?
…
Let me tell you about Homestuck.
Homestuck, whenever it is on a poll, always wins, no matter what the poll is about.
Homestuck is like something Studio Gainax would produce, except it’s made by one guy who happens to be in North America. Also, it’s a webcomic. Sort of. Except it has music. And Flash animations. And interactive portions. And universe devouring demons. Also, it’s nearly 3 years old, and already has nearly 4500 pages to its name, including said flash animations and interactive portions.
As for what it’s about… Trying to explain Homestuck to someone who hasn’t read it is like trying to explain String Theory to a rock. If you DO decide to read it, be warned, the REALLY good stuff starts up around Act 3. Which is about 1000 pages in.
The basic concept, however, is Earthbound meets The Sims. Except crazier. Crazy enough to make Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann seem more realistic, actually.
This is why noone with powers and an IQ higher than a gerbil would ever trust the government– ANY government. And it’s also why no populace worth spit should ever entrust their government with the power to even contemplate doing so.
Invader ZIM character implant?
Loving this more and more each panel
So, was General Faulk inspired by Dan Hedaya or what?
Maybe Peter Falk was the inspiration?
“Ah, just one more question…”
I’m so sorry. I giggled when he said his name is “General Faulk.” Like, really?
Is the scientist in pannel 4 Dib’s father from Invader Zim!?
Any chance will see the people in silhouette?
Yes, but only click, below, if you want spoilers! Mind you, they are only spoilers as at this page in the comic. If you read through to the end, you will see them making appearances. One of them though, is already present on this page.
From left to right they are Super Hiro, Peggy and Zephan Zoeng. In my humble opinion, anyhow. You can look at their pictures/details on the cast list, for even more spoilers.
Honestly, he’s a dead ringer for Dean Stockwell.
(google check)
Ok, he’s still alive. No bad pun there.
Is the person with the magical sword that’s blacked outever going to be showed off? I assume the one with the rifle is peggy.
thanks a lot now i have to clean my laptop because i spit soda all over it from laughing
I hope you were not drinking Apocalypse Soda!
I’m sure someone in three pages of comments already mentioned this two years ago, but I’m amused to note that Peggy appears to have been designated the poster child for “unusual abilities” at this early date.
DUCK SEASON FIRE!!!
