Grrl Power #46 – Yoga Hwarf!
If anyone is just joining us and is unsure what’s happening in the last panel there, jump back a few comics to Sydney’s lunch.
I felt kind of sorry for Sydney while I was drawing this one. She had brief moment of glory then it went rapidly downhill for her, but the sudden realization of what nearly happened and the subsequent adrenaline crash was too much for her.
And even though I’ll specifically address this on the next page, I’ll say it here cause I know people will ask “If Maxima can catch a bullet, why is she having trouble with decidedly sub-sonic barf?” Basically she has to be ready for it. Maxima’s powers largely exist in a pool that she can shift from attribute to attribute, so if she’s caught off guard, her reflexes are only slightly better than a regular person’s. Plus it’s funny.
Not only is she fast enough to catch a bullet but fast enough to catch it softly so that it’s still intact.
To be fair, if she’s fast enough to catch the bullet she’d have to match its speed to grab it. having tried to catch an arrow, I know that it’s a damn difficult thing to do, and physics is NEVER on your side for it.
Now if she’d only vomited at the BEGINNING, the bank robbers would have fled with tears in their eyes and she could have avoided the need for tongue fu. But still…funny as all get out.
Rereading through the archives, I just noticed Sydney’s “Dexter glasses” in panel 4. :-)
That is of course Dexter, Boy Genius, from “Dexter’ Lab,” and no one else of the same name. His glasses always magically follow his facial expressions.
Rereading this page, I realized for the first time that Sidney’s (inherited) ability to eat the most ridiculously spicy food is a minor combat-fit superpower in itself. She can basically breath teargas with a little prepration. It’s nothing compared to her actual powers, but its still effective even against some supers.
And super effective against most non-supers.
But can turn around and bite you in the ass…
Man this comic doesn’t loose it’s awesomeness when re-reading it.
Hmm surprised she’s not dead.
Capsaicin can kill you in large doses, by both swelling, or rupturing of your blood vessels.
I doubt Sydney has the nerve capacity to detect heat nor acid burns on her body anymore. “Tolerance” to Capsaicin is literally because the nerves for burn-related pain die off.
It’s like how those people with no pain receptors are good at combat, but if they fracture a bone, they have no idea and eventually collapse as their muscles get severed from their nervous system.
Sydney Scoville…with the power to orally napalm a room.
max’s reactions are always hilarious
