Grrl Power #508 – Sydney needs work on her combat multitasking
So a few things to cover right off. Pixel’s claws actually project a cutting laser blade (or several, as you can see) and aren’t limited to however long her claws actually are, which look to be like, I dunno, 3/4 of an inch? The laser blade doesn’t go out too far. Like a foot. She can’t chop a building in half like she’s cutting though the main bad guy at the end of an anime.
While writing this page, I almost got distracted by wanting to show how Harem actually saves Krona, since she can’t teleport other people. She teleports about halfway down the side of the building (which is only 2 stories – this method wouldn’t work if someone had already fallen 30 floors, but it’s enough that Krona could break something, or many somethings if she landed wrong) just below where Krona is, and to the side. Harem keeps her inertia, so has almost no momentum for the first fraction of a second. As Krona passes her, she grabs on to her arm and swings her around. This transfers about half of Krona’s momentum to Harem, who teleports again going the opposite direction. Remember Harem can pick her vector when she teleports, almost like she’s going though a portal in, well, Portal. You know. Portal 1 in the ceiling, Portal 2 under a crate, it falls, move Portal 1 to a wall, and you have a gravity powered horizontal box canon. Harem repeats this maneuver until nearly all of Krona’s velocity has been transferred to her, Krona flops on the ground ungracefully but mostly unharmed, Harem flies up into the air until gravity stops her, then she teleports to the ground.
The reason it doesn’t work if someone is already falling at a high velocity is that it rips everyone’s arms out of their sockets. Harem could teleport above them, fall to nearly match their velocity, then start this process, but at some point, Harem’s upwards velocity would exceed grip/joint/tendon strength, so she’d have to bleed off that velocity by falling upwards until she’s barely going faster than the person she’s trying to save and repeat until all is well. But of course, all this has to be accomplished within the total distance of the fall, so your best bet is just not to fall off any buildings in the first place.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like. Share the comic with your friends, then compete with them to see who can contribute the most!
Krona, please resist the temptation to rescue yourself, and let Harem do her thing. You do not have time to debug toggling ‘gravity’ from ‘on’ to ‘off’. I am quite attached to the planet, and want to stay that way!
I love your comments!
Aww, shucks!
*blushes, under fur*
Is it just me or is the WHAM caused by the tentacle a little… Small for how big and strong that thing appears to be?
My Headcanon is that this advanced mannekiller’s heart isn’t really in it. I imagine Marvin’s voice saying, “oh yes, of course you’d dodge it. I’m absolutely rubbish at this. Scions wants you dead, sh should have bloody done it herself, I can’t be bothered. … And now I’m down to one arm, thanks. If you can call this an arm. *Sigh* Just get it over with, I welcome death at this point.”
+1 for making me chuckle. :)
Didn2t they already decided on an level before to see if on flight orb a new one will be open it was even a level that should be related to flight so what is taking sydney too long is probably she forgot that?
That was before Kronachrome nerdgasm’ed everywhere, they also thought they were undetected and safe and had time
But if the claws are so short how did she cut off the whole arm?
And how did she do that with out burning her fingers on the molten metal?
Can they extend? If so how far?
Missed that first part in the comments.
No probs, we are all entitled to express our initial thoughts, without having to read the comments.
Which is actually useful feedback for Dave. You are not alone in thinking that (and it is wholly logical to do so too). So it lets him know that it is the kind of thing that he may want to show in future, rather than mention in the blog.
Mind you finding an angle (or probably sequence) to convey that, at a glance, whilst still showing the rest of the action, and yet not adding too much to the panel count, not confusing the rest of the scene, all the while getting the rest of the layout planned and completed, on schedule for the update…
well suffice it to say that even if I had the artistic talent, I doubt I could pull that all off, when you factor in all the other things needed too (such as the script writing).
If my working hypothesis is correct for the orbs the ones who built them and used them did have instructions which were optically implanted then trained with. They are survival gear and bigger stronger ones could be used as combat weapons. They are either alien tech or much earlier than known tech from an earlier human society more advanced than we are now and now gone.
Given their aquatic discovery, Atlantis would seem to fit the bill for the latter.
10 minutes of waffling?
My record for pondering where to put points is an hour and 40 minutes.
Maybe her skill tree is still in alpha development, so the labels and descriptions aren’t even added to the UI. Most of those nodes probably aren’t even implemented yet, which is why she doesn’t innately understand a power she’s unlocked, the dev is still going, “Shit, I thought I had something for that! Why did she have to pick THAT node!” Then at the worst possible time, which according to Finagle’s Law is the best time, the update releases and the power becomes available.
The dev is probably a sole developer; since they don’t have to share understanding of it with anyone else, then fuck UI comprehensibility, fuck labeling, and no documentation for you!
