I have some kittens that need a home (Updated: maybe not)
The short version of this story is that some strays came around and like dummies me and the wife started feeding them, and they eventually had some kittens. The strays are gone now, but of course we’ve been taking care of the kittens. They were living in an enclosed porch we have attached to the house, with the door open just enough for them to come and go, but not wide enough for tomcats or possums and what have you to get in. It’s been so hot lately that we moved them indoor, and have even started getting them their shots. They’re currently parasite free, and quite domesticated. They figured out the litterbox while they were still on the porch in less than a day. They were born on Memorial Day weekend, so that puts then at about 11 weeks now. They haven’t been fixed yet, as they need to be 12 weeks old at least. There’s 5 of them, 4 girls, one boy. They’re all black except for one girl. The boy also has a little white patch on his chest. The problem is we already have 2 adult cats and besides not wanting a territory spraying war inside the house, we’re fairly certain that one or the other cats would probably murder the kittens before too long. The kittens are, well, rambunctious, as kittens are wont to be, and our cats would get tired of that real fast I think.
We’ve contacted all the no kill shelters in the area, but apparently they’re flush with kittens right now. We’ve hit up friends on facbook, the wife has asked around at work, so now I’m asking around at my work. Here’s some badly framed video of them. I’m not looking to sell them, I just want to find good homes for them, so if you’re in the DFW area or know someone who is, please email me at grrlpowercomic at gmail.
Update: We’ve adopted out two of the kittens. With all 5 they were too much to handle, but three? We’ve become kind of attached and we’re thinking about keeping them, assuming we can integrate them with the two cats we already have. A 5 cat household is a lot though, so we’ll see how it goes.
Copied and shared on FB with links to video.
Thanks!
It’s been a crazy kitten season this year—the rescue I foster for is packed with them, as well. Black cats and kittens are particularly hard to find homes for (I say this as someone with a black cat, myself). I’m not in the area (and couldn’t take the kittens in if I was, since I only have room for one foster at a time thanks to my apartment’s two-animal limit), but I just wanted to say thank you for taking them in and trying to find them places with no-kill shelters and rescues rather than the humane society!
Did you set up petfinder.com profiles for them? That can be helpful! And maybe some of the rescues you talked to could put up courtesy postings for them even if they don’t have room to take them in?
Good luck, and thank you for what you’re doing for those little guys! Please keep us posted on how everything works out!
I didn’t know about petfinder.com, I’ll check it out as this doesn’t seem to be generating the response I was hoping for, and there’s no way I can swing a 7 cat household.
Glad I could help in one small way! Hope everything works out for you guys.
Sooo much cuter as kittens! And less painful, than domesticating a feral cat, like the one which has recently adopted me. It still thinks it is OK, to tell me it needs more stroking, before I go, by catching me with its paw. With claws extended!
I suggest spanking that kitty.
(No, I’m not making a double-entendre.)
(…Okay, maybe a little, but it’s still an actual thing that cats love for some reason.)
Reminds me of my old man (14 years now). Can be real nice and cuddly and comes for stroking and greetings and whatnot, but can’t keep his claws in. Meanwhile he finally got a clue when, after he slapped me on the nose while playing, I didn’t purr for a whole day at him / with him.
Clippers are your friend. Every 3-ish weeks should do it. Though, you do need to learn how to properly cut those claws without making the kitty bleed – but it’s pretty easy to figure out: keep an eye on the white part and don’t cut into the pink part of their claws and you should be alright. That sed, if she/he is an outdoor cat, it might cause problems if the claws aren’t able to hold her weight or help her climb up trees/fences.
Well, I live just south of I-20 next to I-35, and all of our shelters are full as well. I’d love to take some myself, but I have 2 labs who think all small fuzzy things are to chase and bring inside. One of them found a baby bunny in my backyard, and brought it inside to show us.
Where is ‘DFW’? I cannot acronym. xD
Dallas/Fort Worth Texas.
I’m just south of you guys, i’d be interested if it wasn’t for work and my apartment not being pet friendly.
I also was wondering about the acronym, I am not up on US ones. I take it that puts you in the Fast n Loud area?
Yep, and Dallas Car Sharks films here as well as the show about the guys that were all fired by Richard. 3 Discovery/Velocity network shows all shot in the same area.
Dallas/Fort Worth Texas.
I’m just south of you guys, i’d be interested if it wasn’t for work and my apartment not being pet friendly.
DFW is Dallas-Fort Worth. When Texan cities grow together, we tend to just rattle them off together, then find ways to shorten it. I might take one off your hands, but I’m all the way down in CS/Bryan, but that’s a +/- 4 hour drive I just don’t feel like making.
I’m in Houston, but I’ve got several cat loving friends in Dallas. I’ll share this around.
Thank you.
I’m also in Houston, but have a friend in DFW who just had the same situation. My friend was able to adopt them all out by asking a local shelter to advertise them online. They were all adopted fairly quickly. It’ll probably help that you’ve taken such good care of them. Good luck!
I would happily take them all, sadly however I live in Virginia.
They are super-cute, but:
A) I also live in VA
2) My two cats would also be in a murdering mood (not really, they are sweeties and might just beat up the youngsters like they deserved)
X) Yeah, two is my limit, regardless of the cute factor
I hope you find a welcoming home for them soon, as being a stray is a harsh life for a kitteh.
I second petfinder.com — that is how I found my black & white cat.
I wish i could adopt one of those. But there are some problems. First, i already have two cats and my flat is not big enough for a third. Second, i’m a European so getting it would be quite expensive.
I hope they’ll find their furever home.
Such cute kittens! I wish I could take one on, but my apartment isn’t pet friendly and I don’t have time for a trip to Texas before the new semester starts. Hopefully they all get great forever homes.
KITTIES! I hope they all find loving homes.
*has been distributed to a few “places”*
dfw?
ohhh texas i see. hey black wif white spot???

cait sith!
I like kittens very much!
I wish I could but I’m not sure how Boone would react and Cheyenne would likely try to kill any other cat we brought into this house, especially if it were a female.
Heart warming video.
And the idea that one even needs to make a difference between an animal shelter and an no kill shelter infuriates me to no end.
Problem is that I only have a 5th floor apartment, which is bad for kittens who had free access to nature up until now, and I am a german which is also where I live, so i don’t even know if it were possible to get one over here. Also, it usually is the cat choosing the owner and not the other way around, which isn’t exactly easy over that much a distance.
Still, if need be because there is one too many without a home, i`d be willing to make it work somehow; I wanted myself a cat for a long time after all. ;-)
I am indifferent towards pets as long as they do not bother me. But I think it’s really strange to have them when some of you seem to know their cats would murder other kittens. It’s probably all right, lions do that, too. Still strange.
And a webcomic that cat owners love: https://www.breakingcatnews.com/
Im actually about to adopt a kitten and those look super cute, but im all the way up by joplin missouri so theres no way i can drive down there.
Dave you could name them after cast members of the comic. That might make them both more desirable and give the perspective new owners insights into their personalities.
I’ve shared it. I have some friends who have friend in DFW, maybe even some friends in DFW (I lose track of where people live). Maybe one of them wants a cute kitten.
Thanks to your reckless behavior the internet is now one cute kitten video closer to critical mass. We could all die in a massive explosion of fur any day now.
Please “cute” responsibly.
Good Lord. That Kitten looks exactly like my kitten, and is the same age. The only difference is yours has both eyes. Mine only has one.
Consider a pet fostering agency. They’ll probably ask you to foster, but they’ll use pictures and videos to find them homes.
Any luck placing any of your kittens?
One response so far. We’ll see how that goes, then once the kittens are fixed we’ll be more aggressive about it.
I’m going to sue you!!!!! That’s so cute it gave me cavities darn it!!!!! Seriously though, majorly cute kitties. Unfortunately were at the limit for pets with four dogs and two cats here.
Hello! I’m not sure if you’ve found the babies homes yet, but I wanted to give you the contact for a lady who took the last of my kittens when I couldn’t find a home for her. She’s got connections and takes them around to different places. They come out to Rockwall frequently and they accept donations (hint hint for anyone with a good heart that might want to help). Good luck!

Unfortunately I’m half a country away from Texas so a wee bit too far away to take them in, best of luck with that though!
You still have a black cat or two hanging around?
We have two still (we’ve adopted two out) but we’ve become awful attached to them. We’ll see if we can integrate them with our existing cats, and if not I’ll let you know.
*sings* CAT MAAAAAAN!!!! na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na CAT MAAAAAAAAN!!!
LOL Sorry… Couldn’t resist!
Five? Feh. Try dealing with two cats and eight of their insane* spawn.
*and insanely adorable**
**(sigh) I miss them…
will you start a Grrl-Power-lolcat-trend? ;)
those kitties are much too adorable not to adopt.
but live in Europe, and in a very small flat with no place for some
So how long until you become a cat lady. :D
Kittens are easier to integrate than you might think. Adult cats seem to put up with things from kittens that would get any one else knocked across the room.
Trust me, I live in a five cat household. It can be a pain at first, but after they get used to each other, it smoothes out.
How are the cats doing now?
The 3 we wound up keeping are doing well. They’ve gotten their snips and all their shots. The seem a little underweight to me, I think they had some recurring tapeworm issues, but we got them shots for that too. It also may be that our two adult cats are fat and happy, which makes the kittens seem skinny to me.
To alleviate your fears about the kittens getting offed by your cats, that’s very unlikely, in fact domesticated she-cats have known to ADOPT other kittens they have encountered without any parents, so I seriously wouldn’t worry for the lil’uns in that regard, though if one of them is male keep an eye out just in case as hormones can make cats do strange things at times.
When I was a youngster my cat adopted the new puppy we got. Who, when she was older, on two different occasion, chased off dogs which were harassing ‘her mother’!
Not sure if you knew this, but since I do I thought I’d mention it. A black cat with a white patch on the chest is called (ready for it) : A tuxedo cat. No I’m not making this up. Both of our cats are tuxedo cats. Just thought I’d mention that as a mildly interesting side detail since one of your five happens to be in the Tuxedo family.
Much like my army of minions.
Dave, if you see this message, check with a group on FB called And My Cat.
They might have access to resources you don’t (assuming you decide that 5 is too many).
However, that said, kudos for focusing on looking for no-kill shelters for the kittens. My current cat came from a local shelter, and I got her when she was already getting on in the years (she was 10 when I got her).
So no-kill Shelters is something that is close and personal.
They are fully integrated into our household now. Our adult cats aren’t always super excited about it, but no one is going anywhere now. :)
Feral Cat has padded out a lot since I met her. I am hoping there might be some kittens on the way. Either that or I am overfeeding her, and need to cut back on the snax!
She does have quite an odd … hernia… I guess would be the term, on her stomach. Like an umbilical cord, but way thicker than that and fur covered. So it has me worried that it might cause her problems. But she deserves her chance at a litter.
She managed to survive to adulthood without human help, despite that ‘growth’. Well probably because of it. I can well see that she would have been dumped by uncaring people, not wanting a cat with such a problem.
But Feral Cat is clearly a survivor, so I am remaining optimistic. If she does manage to have a litter, I will have her spayed after that. I could not afford to look after more than one litter. I intend to keep all that survive though. And would have them indoors as much as possible.
There are too many hazards here, like wolves, traps and a main road fairly close. Plus, if I have to head back to the UK, due to Brexit making it untenable here, I would not know what circumstances I will find myself in. But I doubt it would include a garden.
It would not be fair to take a wild cat out of her environment and trap her in a house or thrust her into the unfamiliar hazards of an urban neighbourhood. Main road or not it does not have much traffic, so she would be at a huge risk. So if I left the country, and countryside, she would be better remaining. I can always leave food with neighbours and friends nearby might take her in.
But it would be nice to have her kittens safe, to carry on her legacy. And to keep me company.
Feral Cat just gave birth. On my lap! She has four kittens and they are all look healthy. Fortunately I had a suitable box, cat litter tray and so on, all ready. So mother and kittens are nursing happily in the box, at my feet.
The day before yesterday was the first time that Feral Cat decided to stay in the house, for more than just a few minutes. I had gradually being getting her acclimatised to it, at her own pace. That night was a storm though, with cold rain. She got wet, so I dried her out and brought her inside. And she decided it was cosy enough to stay until it was over.
Last night we had an even longer storm, and it was just as cold. As it clearly was not going to give up until daylight, and we were both comfortable in my armchair, we just went to sleep, with her on my lap. Quite remarkable given that she was not tame enough to even be handled, just a few months ago!
First thing this morning she started to give birth. Fortunately I still had her wrapped in a towel, so I did not need to disturb her until she was done.
I is a kitty step-dad! Wheee!
It looks like three of them take after their dad, a ginger tom I decided to call Garfield, as he looks like said cartoon cat. I have no idea what his owners call him mind. The other one takes after Feral Cat, a mottled mix of colours but mainly a dark brown colour.
I’m just loving Deus right now. Hope to se much of him in the future.
