Grrl Power #412 – How long can trusty Recruit Scoville hold out?
Ok this is one of those situations where the webcomic format is not ideal since you guys reading along as its posted can’t just turn the page. Obviously Max is pointing at one of the trinkets on the shelf I mentioned last page, so just bear with while this gets resolved.
Deus saying “lease” in the first panel is the result of some significant editing. Originally there was a tangent there about having to bribe and shoot his way to the coast. Shoot bandits, not so much the legal authorities, unless they go overboard with the bribery. Pirates he’s not so worried about. Aggressive, unregistered vessels in international waters make excellent targets for weapons tests. I liked the detail and the world building but ultimately there was too much dialog and I didn’t think he’d spell out the seedier side of his business foibles to Max.
And yes, in case you’re wondering, when Veridian Dynamics got cancelled went out of business, Deus scooped them right up. Weaponized pumpkins? That’s right up his alley. If you don’t get that reference, then you should check this out. Arrg. And if you can’t see that link for whatever reason, it’s a show called Better off Ted. It was all too short lived but I consider it one of the funniest things ever on TV. Not quite on the same echelon as Red Dwarf or Archer, but still way up there.
Edit: Vote incentive is updated! Comment on it here.
Patreon supporters can view this page at twice the size! (as soon as I wake up and post it then immediately go back to sleep since Patreon doesn’t have a way to schedule posts yet.) $1 and up, but feel free to contribute as much as you like :)
Here’s the link to the new comments highlighter for chrome, and the GitHub link which you can use to install on FireFox via Greasemonkey.
By the way, I’d say that expression on his face is about the same I’d expect from a cartoon cat getting a bowl of canary in creamsauce with catnip sprinkles served to him.
you forgot the part where there are Chocolate Mice on the side for dessert
It looks almost exactly like the Grinch: https://youtu.be/-oehGtcW6BU
I’m betting its a framed pic of Maxima from her awkward teenage years. :D
actually, we can see his trinkets on the previous page, that being said though it’s hard to tell which one she is pointing at aside from that it’s probably on the middle shelf due to the shelves orientation compared to Deus’ head on the previous page.
I’m guessing it’s the green melted looking thing on the far right of the middle shelf..
The medallion would be my bet. Nothing else makes sense right now. Although, that said, I suspect that we haven’t sen it yet. We don’t see the entire shelf.
Just figured out that face: Willem Defoe from “Spider-man”!!!!!
Sydney is going to sleep well tonight :D
Poor Vale though, she’s going to be therapy for a long time :P (first of many :D)
I figure she’s pointing to (1) the mysterious object that got her all golden or (2) a thong she wore while they were dating and she threw into the deepest ocean trenches when they broke up.
I agree with A… But wouldn’t be unhappy with B :D
Ok so the trinkets behind him were the horn of the Last Unicorn, the Dark Crystal, the Fleur De Lis, the Maltese Falcon, some necklace thingy, some ore thingy, some green thinky, and some obelisk-like thingy
So ”that” must be one of the last four things that I can’t identify.
About that beaker with that green liquid in it? Will Sydney drink it?
Holy crap, more than two people have seen Better Off Ted! That was a brilliant show! Is Phil still a threat to the Planet Jupiter?
Is Jupiter still a planet in this star system?
It’s either a planet, or a very small star. Last I heard, the jury was leaning towards planet, but hadn’t come to a firm decision yet.
LOVE the Better Off Ted reference!!!
I ALSO love the Ren and Stimpy reference. “History Eraser Button” may be their best episode.

I’m trying to mentally replace the faces of those two random scientists with Erik Selvig and Lucius Fox.
Get. OUT!! Go on, get out!!!
Those two are not just ‘random scientists’!!! They are Phil and Lem
DaveB did very good job of getting their likeness
I am sorry for making such a mistake.
Clearly my Pop-Fu needs more polishing, I shalt abscond myself in shame and study, so I may return better equipped for the rigors of fandom and cultural references.
No need to go that far, it’s just you appeared to be the only one to comment about not recognizing them
Aaaaand, I’m only just now putting together that Deus is the Executive Officer of Machina industries -.-,
Deus Ex Machina
Hahahaha…I’m slow.
For those who are not familiar with Veridian Dynamics, enjoy a selection of their ads: here
I cannot get over how much I like Dues. Evil vibes aside if I was in charge of a multi national multi billion/trillion corporation. I don’t think I would do much different cause DAMN if that isnt the most amusing thing to do.
Depressingly, he comes across as fairly close to most of the really rich people I’ve met. Including the semi-evil vibes, and the fascination with something/somebody he can’t have (Max) and the willingness to cut deals to save time. I’ve never yet met somebody who was crazy enough to try and rebuild an entire country, but I have actually sat down with one and worked up a plan to do so. Mind you, we both knew it wasn’t going to happen, but…eh. Why not? It was something to do (retirement is not kind to a lot of these people).
And… dam you metal gear, you have ingrained the sound in my skull regardless of the comic that it pops up in.

You’re not the only one
While I love the look on Deus’s face in the last panel, it keeps drawing my attention to his body in the panel, which feels very, very “off” to me for some reason- perhaps just the the lack of definition beyond the overly turned out arms… but it just feels like all the effort was put into his face and nothing else.
DaveB put Green Goblin’s head on Hulk’s body, that’s what feels ‘off’ :D
the look on Dues face reminds me of Toby Maguire when he was spiderman
YES!! Have been saying that as well!!!
The button in panel 3 makes me think of the punch line of a short story: You would have killed the last person who pushed the button.
On the contrary, the webcomic format is just fine and I can just turn the page…
… because I’m an archive-crawler and not some ridiculous page-chaser prat.
Did I just see a “Better Off Ted” reference???!!!
you know what i finally just remembered who scoville reminds me of. i’m suprised no one ever said this earlier but she reminds me of DEE DEE from Dexters Lab. hyper activity the destruction and the savynes of her character definitelly reminds me of her
Sydney, back off and put down the beaker or we’ll break out the pencil erasers!
Better Off Ted was in fact amazing, and yeah, SO way up Deus’ alley from what I’ve seen.
Shes like dee dee from dexters lab
AM I the only one who is not hughely concerned about seeing Sydney in a mad scientist lab? I don’t think, anybody would notice if Sydney made a guest appearance in the Girl Genius web comic, she’d blend right in…except that in that comic, people with her personality are expected to be mad geniuses.
Nice! As a firefox user that uninstalled flash months ago I can say it’s nice to live in the future, and I’m happy Chrome users will join soon. There are some pages that cause problems when completely removing flash, but it’s far less important than it was a few years ago. And as noscript user I’m used to web pages not working properly.
