Grrl Power #22 – Would you believe me if I peed blood?
You’d think that she would have realized that people would be asking her about what was in the thing and would have come up with something 1) believable and 2) uninteresting enough that it wouldn’t prompt further questions, but I’m guessing she was caught flat footed right off the bat with it and just panics every time it comes up now.
Too bad none of Sydney’s powers allow her to fib.
Maybe that’s a good thing.
Don’t want her to go to the dark side.
PS/BTW:
What’s with the Weeble version of Olivia in panel 4?
I guess the variable art style *is* the art style.
Yeah I’m heavily mixing styles in my art, just cause I like so many different styles from manga to traditional cartooning to superhero comic style to minimalist characters with googly eyes and expressive faces. I’ve seen people describe the comic as amine style, but with maybe a few exceptions, Sydney is the only one with amine style eyes and to a lesser extent, hair. The other characters have more traditional cartoony eyes, and when we finally meet Maxima, you’ll see that she has more of a traditional western style comic look to her. But I love the expressiveness typically associated with amine, so no matter what a character’s “style” normally is, they’ll have their share of exaggerated expressions.
Don’t you mean “anime”?
eevr herad of a tpyo? teh bairn is sramt eougnh to unstedrnad waht is wittren as lnog as teh frist and lsat ltteer are in palce.
if you can read that. then my point is proven. and such a small one won`t really matter anymore
Given the difference between the first part and the latter part of your post, I can determine that the first part was intentionally mangled to the point of illegibility.
As to whether your omission of capitals or misplacement of periods in the latter was intentional or not… I can’t be sure. You don’t reference it directly. The former seems to be a test of whether or not one can rearrange sentences made up entirely of anagrams in real-time. To what end, I’m not sure… but it doesn’t make much sense to me.
It is an extremely witty way of saying “that is a blatant typo, that need not be picked up on”. One that makes a profoundly clear demonstration in the first paragraph. And then lives up to it’s principles in the second.
I really should have stopped being a silent lurker and come out of the shadows to give it a thumbs up the first time I saw it.
I’m rather late to the party (re-reading the comic. don’t know why; I’ve got a bajillion other comics and manga I’m reading, and an epic. Technically two, but I’m only actively reading one right now), but I’m surprised neither of you noticed that his NAME was also a purposeful typo. Just figured I’d point that out, since nobody has, and I don’t think I trolled (as in the fishing term, though that is the source of the interwebz’ use of it) the waters of the comments this early into my first reading.
Probably a typo. But maybe organic chemistry involves even more creativity than it’s usually given credit for…
right now Sydney seems like a lousy super heroine, but then again I haven’t read the cast page because I like surprises.
She seems like a wonderful heroine to me. Just a horrible liar. Very interesting expressions you use here. Someday, you must do something like a stream, I’d be very interested to watch your work.
I’ve thought about doing a stream, but unlike Jeph Jacques or Scott Kurtz, I can’t knock out a comic in 45 minutes. These literally take me 6-10 hours to do, admittedly a lot of that is staring off in to space while I consider how to lay the page out or being distracted by whatever is playing on the screen next to the cintiq. I haven’t developed that crazy focus that a lot of the long time pros have. But who knows, maybe knowing that other people are watching would make me concentrate better.
And I guess I should mention, follow me on twitter if you want to catch it if I do announce me streaming doing art. It may sound stupid but I haven’t figured out to actually blog using word press, at least using the comic press plugin. I can blog but I don’t know where it appears. I think I need to add a link to the navigation or something. I need to figure out how to steam from a computer with ustream. The last time I tried I couldn’t figure it out cause you needed some virtual webcam software to broadcast your screen or something. I dunno, maybe that’s Justin.tv, which was designed for streaming consoles. Well I’ll try and figure it out.
I’ve seen Justin tv. When I made an account and tested it, it automatically started streaming from my webcam on my laptop. No extra work needed.
It’s a little more complex when streaming your desktop instead of a webcam, and the real trick was figuring out how to get it to stream my second monitor which is where all the action happens, but I eventually figured it out.
She’s a great character, great personality. I only meant since I haven’t seen any super powers other than super bad lying and maybe super ability to open the merchandise at work, she doesn’t seem like much of a super hero, I fully expect to be proven wrong, and even if I’m not, she’s an awesome character.
no one ever could tell clark kent had super powers. most of the time Lois thought he was a wimp.
OOoh exciteing vacation 3 months ago time for a flash back with in a flash back im getting more and moreexcited as we draw ever closer to seeing what happend adn how Syd got her powers
I wonder how many pages this will go through before Joel finds out what’s in the tube?
Heh I already have that one drawn… in my head.
It’s only 277 pages later.
And has been the most eagerly awaited reveal, over the past four years.
Technically, hasn’t he already been told, but he just didn’t believe the answer?
He will, tomorrow. And somehow ….
296 pages later and he still will not know….untill the next page
I like the anime style of this one. poor girl though being asked what is in it.
In before permanent Hiatus in under a year.
Hah hah that’s way too common in the webcomics realm isn’t it? All I can say is that I plan on being around for a while.
Yours was one of the few comics I bother to read before it had been around for more than a year/ 100 comics (been disappointed too many times) but I don’t regret it!
Thanks Dave!
Ahem. We Want Dabbler! That is all.
I give her points for being original, but to get away with that one she needs tubes going into her.
She spent the 20 points on that tube she is wearing on her back!
Ironicaly you don’t know how right you ar e!
Clearly it is full of all of her roleplaying dice and rulebooks. :D
you know Syd could get nasty and say it a giant dildo but thenim sure Joel and compny would wanna see it
“It’s the arm of the last person who asked me that!”
Lol seems Syd likes dismemberment anthen careing around rotting arms about, i supose itsa pretty tight so it would keep the smell from getting out unless she has it in some kind of preservitive
A interesting web comic. I will be back…
I think Sydney is announcing that she just “found” someone in the restroom…
And I think I remember you saying you used to live in the DFW area. Do you still?
Yeah I’m Dallas-ish.
PM me then. I have an offer.
What like through WordPress? I don’t know how to do that… actually it’s amazing that I got this page working at all, hah hah, but you can message me through twitter or the facebook page.
LOL this sounds really skectchy some real cloak and dagger type stuff , im curious if its an offer he can refuse tho
She must have bought the superpower to change the tube’s strap position with that big lie disadvantage. Fourth frame, when she’s handling the tube, it magically changes to be wrapping around her left side instead of her right as in all the other frames. I’m talking about her lower torso, of course, since it seems to still go over her left shoulder in all instances (as physically impossible as the strap may seem in the case of left-shoulder, left-side).
Hah hah whoops.
That made me laugh out loud. She checks if its plugged in.
You would think she would have worked on this one little problem. But she’s human and young and its new to her. Though this should burn her butt enough to get it right.
If it starts vibrating all of a sudden, we’ll know what’s inside, heh heh.
Her cell phone?
Seeing the final panel gave me a twinge of sadness for the passing of City of Heroes. The toilets in public buildings had three doors, two marked with the traditional male and female icons, respectively. The third having an oversized “huge” superhero silhouette!
Really? Shit, I came up with that gag on my own. I was planning on putting in the comic in just a few pages actually. Oh well, I guess we can call it homage then.
I’m afraid so. However, if you came up with it independently too, then kudos goes to you. It is a very funny joke. There is no need to call it a homage. There are 7 billion people on the planet. Trying to find a new concept, that at least one of them has not come up with something similar, would likely require you to live 7 billion and one years!
I had a look to see if anyone had posted a screenshot of it, but could not find one. However I did find a riff on the joke, involving aliens instead of heroes.
Yeah I’m learning more and more that it’s not the joke that matters so much as the execution, because basically everything has been thought of. In this case it’s just a sign on a wall so there’s not much you can do execution wise though.
Real life: a building I used to visit occasionally had three identical doors off a hallway. The one on the left said “Men”. The one on the right said “Women”. The one in the middle said “Mechanical”.
But a portable dialisis machine should be practical to MANY people
Just be sure to invent it with wireless technology. If you can make it needless too, you could become a millionaire.
*Ahem* Needleless not needless.
Needless.That is the correct spelling.
For the wrong word. :-D
My intent was to imitate the word wireless, but as applied to needles.
That little comment at the bottom of the comic page got me thinking. What system would you use to write up these characters? I was thinking Hero System, but character like Sydney would be Hella expensive. I had originally thought of making a multipower for each orb (since you can use two multipower slots as long as they’re not in the same multipower), but that would send her cost through the roof.
Well, the comment itself screams “GURPs” to me. Even if it likely originates from one of the other systems, from what I recall of DaveB‘s familiaritie’s. GURPS would certainly have no problems replicating her powers.
I do not think that you need worry about the point cost she has in a particular system, so long as recreating the various characters end up with point costs that feel balanced compared to each other. If a system has a set point total for “average starting characters” that is probably not the best starting basis to use if you want to accurately reflect a specific character from comics or movies. Do the balancing to get the feel of the character and her abilities right first, then worry about how the points turn out.
If I had a player in a game who wanted to play a specific character, I would gear the power level of the campaign around that character (assuming no other over-riding considerations). If it turns out that she balances out equal to a well-developed ‘normal’ hero, with lots of power stunts and the like, then that is the kind of level that other characters can create their characters at too.
Campaign implications being that other less gifted individuals might be resentful of the higher power that the player characters have. And the players will be facing much more formidable foes, and other challenges, from the outset, than typical starting characters using that system.
I don’t care ’cause I’m up-to-date, but anyone at this page in the comic might call this comment a spoiler.
Aw, that’s adorable! XD
Reading this through again, and I still love Sydney :).
Re-reading … Saw the little text at the bottom, and she really did put that +20 into something good. Hyperactive Reflexes.
Nope. The tube.
