Grrl Power #17 – Kung Shoe
As to Joel’s comment, I’m pretty sure every joke has basically been done. At least we know he reads XKCD. I mean there are like 40K webcomics out there, some of them have been running for years and years. And then there’s every movie, TV show, comic book, strip and stand up routine. Of course, the context of a joke matters. Given a particular situation or characters, the same joke could be more or less funny. The “why did the chicken cross the road” joke in Alien Nation (the movie) was actually funny, at least compared to how non-funny that joke usually is. The thing is, you can’t just watch a clip, it takes half the movie to set it up for it to even be as modestly amusing as it is.
I’m actually surprised there are any new songs these days. It seems like every combination of notes and instruments would have been tried by now. Maybe this (youtube) lends some credence to the idea that we’re approaching a media singularity, where the answer to every sentence beginning with “hey have you heard…” is “Yes.”
Got to watch the bouncing at the mention that he came to visit then. At least she missed with the shoe, that could have hurt.
Lol nice, but some men just dont learn never tease a super powered woman about her relationships.
Actualy it turns out he had actualy HAS a reason to not over antagonis her….
Yep, the ‘Kung Shoe’ joke has been done before: https://www.footloosecomic.com/footloose/pages.php?page=42
And, yep, it would hurt if it hit: https://www.footloosecomic.com/footloose/pages.php?page=59
Huh, I didn’t even think about the kung-shoe thing, I was talking about variants of the “Get this ____ up in this bitch” line.
…jitsu…
Alternatively, I have read of trakshu-jitso, the art of running away.
Weird:
Firefox gives ma a “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead” warning if i follow Hu Mi?‘s link to “Footloose”, but not if i go there directly…
@Comichero I am fairly sure that he does not know she is super-powered, heck I am honestly not sure that she IS super-powered yet, although her nervousness earlier kinda suggests that she is.
@Menlendur well her super alias is Halo it says so in the chaaracter sheets unless she has a perviously unknowen of twin but as a general rule of thumb all women has some sort of super power even if they dont know about it or it doesnt seem particualry super, its always a good plan to not piss a woman off as dave im sure he fears to anger his GF or better yet ask your self have you ever willing pissed your mother off when you were a child i know i didnt i mean the one time i did i got scared and locked my self inthe bathroom she got so pissed that she grabed a sledge hammer and beat the door down, also ask any married man if thye go about willing making their wives mad, im sure the ones you do find that do are women beating and all around and general a-holes
Just for future reference, but new readers wanting to avoid spoilers should go to the next page now….the spoiler tags and editing here is wonky.
Yes, her superhero alias is Halo, I am aware of that.
This is a flashback several months before she became a superhero, hence it is not certain she has her powers quite yet.
I debated stripping down the Bio page for all the characters until they’re each properly introduced in the strip, but the way I started off with the comic sort of took the surprise out of the process, but I also figured that introducing her that way was a better hook to keep people reading until I get to some of the meatier stuff. There’s still plenty of surprises to come though.
Also, I suspected that not a lot of people would visit the Bio page, and the site Analytics have largely confirmed this. So only the more engaged people will have seen any of that stuff.
Wooo hear that this makes me if not at the very least one of Dave’s most loyal readers as i have expressed intestes in getting to know the characters thus why i can give social commentary on their personalitys but as to weather she is aware of her super powers while ture is un certain either she’s knowen for a every long time and has choosen to keep it secret herself thus living vicariously out her life in a comic book where she could feel competely comfortable with her self and her powers, beacause i suspect until some unforseen event or an event that we are not privy too has changed her outlook on life, and thus asuming the mantel of Halo, much like peter parker asumed the mantel of spiderman after watchign his uncle getting killed by the very man he preveted from stopping like uncle Ben said “with great power comes great responsblity”, but only Dave and those whom hes told or shared the story with thus far know for sure, and im positive that he is not going to share or spoil the surprize for us of how she became Halo.
Some of these things will start to be talked about in the next few comics, but of course I’ll have to parcel it out and keep you hungry.
Well, in any case I look forward to when this comic is much larger :p It seems great so far :D
I concur i wait with baited breath for moday to come asit has become my new favorite day it used to thursday
I’ve been under the impression that her superpowers, by her bio, are item based….possibly inside that tube she carries around. It mentions she has a number of orbs but only a certain number can work at a time. I also got a feeling that she was asking about the superhero working at a comic shop with a purpose, not just random. But that was just my thought. /shrug
“What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.” — Ecclesiastes 1:9, aka, really fucking old.
WOOOOO i love axis of awesome and good comic been reading it so far so good
Does she have a boyfriend? If not then why is she skipping away? O_o
has anyone noticed that in the last panel his right eye is yellow?
If we run out of combinations of notes and instruments, invent new instruments!
…Or notes…?
I know someone very much like Sydney, even likes to throw her shoe when angered.
Someone should make a comic about a girl superhero who’s power is to throw shoes really, really well.
Huh, when did Joel get a bald spot? I’m on a re-read of the archives atm
Fairly late, I know, trawling back to see if a question I have has already been asked, but I notice your reference to a joke with a long-ish build-up, and raise you this:

Enjoy trying to make it to the end :)
Reading the comic again. Just noticed this. Joel has parts where his front spikey bang deals are brown and some where they are black. [From his intro, till here don’t know about future strips.]
So what is it supposed to be. Brown or black?
His hair is either black or very dark brown, and I wasn’t sure what to do with it at this point.
Awesome. Are the earlier chapters where it’s a dirtier brown going to get darkened up? Or is that going to get chalked up to lighting?
Correcting old art is a bottomless well. I’m fixing some big things but I’m not sure this qualifies. I will do another pass as I’m putting the book together so we’ll see.
It’s called lachancla
