Grrl Power #155 – Halo (The Mighty)
I had originally intended to skip this page since it’s really just Sydney introducing herself by her hero name for the first time, and then some banter, but then I realized as I finishing the next page that it was this page I was planning on rolling out the Halo graphic in the Who’s Who. Not that it’s such a momentous event, it just seemed weird to have it show up without any real prompting from that day’s comic.
I’ve started on an Anvil pinup for the vote incentive, but we had a super busy week at work with extra hours and I barely got this page done on time. Plus I can’t decide if I want just a picture of her flexing, casually lounging, or maybe something a little more cheesecakey. I’m not sure I like what I have so far. So I’ll continue to work on that, and try and get the SEAL shirt somewhere those interested can buy it, we’ll just see how this week is at work.
Grrl Power is on to round 3 of the TGT Tournament. Throw a vote if you are inclined!
Sydney’s gonna needs a shirt when she makes corporal “I make Klinger look sane”
YES, I would definitely buy one.
The only problem is that Klinger was perfectly Sane. He only pretended to be crazy to get out of the Army. Sydney might actually be crazy (though our kind prefers the word eccentric). Ironically enough though, the women’s dresses (might be frowned upon but) would not be even close to section 8 material today, because the Military is trying to figure out how to integrate transgendered people into the force.
I love those old Klinger centric episodes of MASH, especially when he comes close to getting a discharge but blows it at the last minute, or tried to eat a JEEP then kiss an Admiral. Classic.
Sydney is perfectly sane. She just has… different priorities to mundane folks.
You can be crazy but still be sane. You can be insane but not crazy. “Insane” is a legal term designed to keep people incapable of making rational decisions or understanding the consequences of their actions from criminal prosecution or bearing legal responsibility for anything.
As for Klinger, when he DID get out of the Army, he immediately came right back and started being goofy all over again. As the Army was pulling out of Vietnam… HE DECIDED TO STAY! (Granted he had found a local girlfriend by then as opposed to the skank who cheated on him in Toledo.)
M*A*S*H took place during the Korean war, not Vietnam. I can agree with the point about Klinger, though.
Looked at from the “Catch-22” perspective, the very fact that Klinger wanted out of the Army was prima facie evidence that he was sane.
I don’t understand why you armed forces guys don’t like the word “crazy”. As someone who is certifiable, as in “if they’d let me have the papers I could scan them and show you”, I can personally attest (along with a couple friends of mine) that we enjoy being crazy. It doesn’t define us, it’s just extra flavoring added to the mix.
This comment aged like gym socks :(
I can’t believe no one has commented on the Commodores/Brickhouse reference…
Maybe because she’s not “letting it all hang out”.
I’m depressed that I read the entirety in a few hours…
Welcome. Fortunately there is a prescription which can cure that depression. DaveB has a fondness for hidden details. Both in the dialogue and the art. If you re-read the comic looking for those, you will likely find layers of hidden meaning in places you did not expect it. And, if you suspect there is something that you are missing, us comment-a-holics will likely have discussed it in the comments for each page.
cue cards? Sydney??
She’s more likely to build a castle of cards out of them, and call it skullcrusher mountain than to even know why she was handed out the cue cards!!!
You know, if the blue ball wasn’t in panel 7, then her sideways-ness would be her showing off her Powers of Annoying Flight. Also it would explain how she manages to be sideways in midair like that.
My first read-through, I took it that the extreme leaning was purely for comic effect. The second time, I wondered too, but DaveB confirmed, on the first page of comments, that it was just for the laughs and no powers involved.
Thanks for bringing my attention to Sydney’s balls. (That SO did not sound right)
I missed the detail all the way until Sunday night. This panel solves the mystery question of what orientation the orbs take when Syd is horizontal. They remain parallel to the ground and not perpendicular to the top of her head. We may all sleep soundly until the next comic is released in 5…4…3…2….
Looks to me like they were trying to stay oriented relative to Halo’s head, but did not want to whack Peggy. +1 point for built in safety features.
Yep, that certainly didn’t sound right…
I’d add that Sydney could set a whole new level for the term “blue balls” but she only has one of that color.
Crap. I have made to the current comic. I will have a black hole in my soul for many many weeks. Oh well, “previous comic bookmark!”
I think Sydney’s true superpower is being an almighty cloudcuckoolander impenetrable to common sense. The orb thing is just a bonus.
Sydney: “I forgot how to soldier.”
Archon: “Goddammit Moon Moon…”
Rereading the archives…They’re probably regretting the idea that she is ‘approachable’…
