Grrl Power #993 – On the origin of succubi
Succubi are usually thought of as dream demons, but at least in my little corner of the fantasy-verse, their origins are somewhat more… humble. And as with many typical succubus things, Dabbler didn’t specialize in the dream stuff. She can do it, albeit with some limitations, but when it came time to sign up for the 301 level courses, she went for advanced particle physics instead of “Dream Shagging.” Exploitation of Tetryon Tachiopole Interactions 301 sounded more interesting to her. I mean, she was a succubus in college. She was already pretty good at sex. Just take a minute to imagine what a succubus’s experimental phase would consist of.
“Huh, I’ve never done it with a robot chimera before… Unless you count golems as robots. I guess they’re a kind of robot. Okay, so I have done it with a robot chimera, but I’m game if you three are.”
Tamer: Enhancer 2 – Progress Update:
Spent most of the weekend on the new vote incentive/pinup, so I only got 2 more chapters edited. Only 5 to go though.
November’s vote incentive is… actually not ready quite yet, but I put up a teaser of sorts. The nude version is done, I just have to get the clothed version ready. Hopefully it will be up with the Thursday post.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
This line about how using a animation spell to get a broom to sweep by itself and how this relates to succubus has me looking at the Sorcerers Apprentice from Fantasia in a hole new way. What else could Micky have been using that spell for?
… Aaand I just ruined so many peoples childhood.
Still cant be any worse than the image Sydney gave of Zombie Handies. Just please Stop talking girl.
BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Sydney says the greatest things!
BTW, I was thinking more like Real Doll…..design your own version…
Oh yeah, you may not want to know what I pictured for panel 8….
Some of the first trials may have been less than optimal . XD
“What else could Micky have been using that spell for?” Unfortunately, not a lot. In Goethe’s ballad, the apprentice was only able to enchant a broom to fetch water from a well. The chippy’s problem was, he didn’t know the “off switch”.
The many versions of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” through the ages were not more than morality tales. You’d get a better kick from Heinrich Hoffmann’s “Struwwelpeter”, written about 1845.
Well, that’s about what I expected, from earlier beating around the bush: Succubi are an engineered race of sex ‘slaves’. Only the slave part has become mostly nominal on account of succubi being very good at making their masters view them fondly…
Or, maybe not so much as race, I’m gathering, as a kind of inheritable succubus genetic/magic “bolt on”, the succubi probably mates with a male, modifies the sperm, then mates with a female, resulting in the female getting pregnant, and giving birth to a new succubus.
So Dabbler is currently eyeing Super Hiro and Max as ideal donors…
Oh Dear Lords of Below! Can you imagine a Super Dabbles? O_o
We will here in the next couple of days or weeks if the slave thing is cultural or biological.
Cultural being since the species began as non-sentient, the law still regards them as property. And when they gained sentience the law was not upgraded along those same lines and kept defining them as property (probably along with every species that is not a demon or devil that get caught in that particular infernal dimension)
Biological of course being that as the lonely arch wizards increased the sapience of their toys they also built in more dependency on being owned, so as not to risk losing their favorite ‘toy’ to less ancient arch wizards, or from getting ideas about having her own agency.
Or Dave can surprise is again with a plot twist inside a plot twist :)
No no no… you’re almost there, but not quite…
Succubi are a genetically-engineered *Sexually Transmitted Disease*.
You know, I kinda like non-violent Vehemence. His personality is so different when he’s not “powering-up” on violence. It’s like his power is really an addiction.
He’s a great character in general, one of the best in the comic.
And when its not violence, his addiction is to Hostess.
That’s actually true of all superheroes. That’s why we have Earth-51914
But why BBC version Marvin? WHY???
Because Sydney would be very fond of that series.
It’s the better version.
Doglas Adams was involved in making that series.
British television is essentially theatre in front of a camera. The props are not intended to be believable, they are theatre props; representative and iconic rather than literal depictions. This is why when Americans did a Dr Who movie it was terrible even though the SPFX were objectively better. And they tried to make it an action movie.
They tried to restrain the urge with the HHGTTG movie but camp theatre doesn’t come naturally to them. The BBC would have done it on a fifth the budget and it would have been more successful at the box office. Possibly not in the USA, but everywhere else.
On the difference between American and British comedy:

Well now we know the real reason Gandolf kept vanishing in the middle of the books.
maybe that explains his interest in hobbits and their love of partying and height
Vote Incentive: Sailor Maxima?
nono its killbill sailor Maxima …..
I am shocked at how nobody has brought up the Replicants from the Blade Runner franchise yet, Especially as how BR:2049 was directly concerned with the dividing line from Replicant / Human, with the only thing they couldn’t do was to procreate… Right up until Tyrell figured it out for the end of movie 1 that is, which was basically the starting point of movie 2 (yeah yeah, time and subterfuge and secrets aside, that’s basically what was going on…) it’s just a matter of time before more and more are made/born and if they go out in society-in-general, then the suspicion of them being Replicants is AUTOMATICALLY dismissed just because they have a kid!… at least until the secret gets out, then you’ll have which-hunts like crazy by paranoid humans, etc.
Well it’s such an obvious thing, isn’t it?
Whole heaps of fiction have dealt with the line between artifical and alive.
Azimov touched on it with some of his later Robot stories.
Hell, go back to the original Golems of jewish foklore for more of this stuff. Including Adam and Lilith.
It’s such a weird place to draw the line, too, considering how the ability to procreate has as little to do with your ability to pass the turing test as said test has to do with you being intelligent or sapient, or whatever you gonna call it.
Either you are a robot, in which case it does not matter how close you resemble a person, or you are not, in which case it does not matter what your body and brain are made out of.
Let’s be fair. Half of humanity will have difficulty passing the Turing test.
Convincing somebody else you are intelligent? That’s already a hard sell on the fact alone. Doing so only through typed messages? …
Reproduction is an obvious line between ‘alive’ and ‘not-alive’, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right one or even relevant.
There are any number of sterile cross-breeds in the animal world – mules/hinnies, ligers/tigons, etc. In each case, while they may be able to mate, they cannot produce offspring. Are they not alive?
We can imagine a robot along the lines of today’s worker-drones, one sufficiently sophisticated that it could build its successor out of parts and programming. It may be have Person-level sapience, or it may be a completely solipsistic automaton. Is that not procreation?
welll a LOT of anime has explored the diffrence in created and biological sentience they are the pro and an tagnoists in many and explored in depth in anime like key metal idol, plastic memories, exiled from eden, bubblegum crisis, armatage the third, and gost in the shell to name a few …. also in western culture in movies and comix with D.A.R.Y.L., short circut, maximum overdrive, 2001, 2010, and the exterminator sieries for movies and Vision, Brainiac, and more in comix you can fins a lot covering it if you look ………
I think what I love best about this page is how wonderfully polite Kevin is about making his snack request.
I mean, it’s a shit request, but still…I just want to give him all the snack cakes now…
…snack cakes…snack cakes….
OMY FXING SHIRT BALLS KEVIN SOUNDS LIKE OFFICER CHUNK FROM V:tM BLOODLINES!
https://youtu.be/AdbN3n3Iiq0
Why is it a shit request?
Because snoballs suck.
Its not the taste. Its the consistency.
They do suck pretty consistently.
(I’m actually quoting Zombieland)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVb6PEIoTHs
But yes, they suck consistently. :)
Wow, that’s one very niche set of knowledge there.
I liked V:tM Bloodlines and I had no idea who that was – had to check the V:tM wiki
I feel like a Loremaster now. o.o’
…but honestly, I actually liked Chunk so much. I really wished I could have ghouled him.
And that I could have kept Heather alive.
My first play through, I actually cried when she died.
O hail, great loremaster of Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines.
The entire game was really a masterpiece, story-wise and gameplaywise, for how long ago it was made.
The only problem with it at all was how incredibly buggy it was for years until players finally modded away most of the problems. I only played it twice, once as a Brujah and once as a Malkavian. Then the file got all messed up and I had to uninstall it, and I never reinstalled the game because of reasons that utterly escape me now. Probably because as a kid, I got frustrated that I never got to finish the game as a Malkavian and would have to restart from the beginning again.
Artificial beings made for sex that require the psionic energy from sex to sustain their own continued existence, can reproduce, are sapient, and their descendants inherit the need for sex to survive and likely increased sex drive….and are regarded as property simply by virtue of being descended from these, even though as established they can cross-breed with other species and its just the sex stuff that is passed down…
so far this is not the argument Dabbler seems to think it is, and less rational and more trigger happy individuals may have already taken Thothogoth’s head on reflex at that point, unless her next words are very convincing.
So, you are implying that Tommy is the one who created the first succubae?
How old do you think he is?
Uh no, I absolutely and clearly am not.
He however by saying “uppity slave” is implying a continuation of this treatment of those descended from the constructs.
No he isn’t. It merely means that there might be connotations to the word in combination with Succubi that are not commonly used in English, but are common knowledge in space.
Hence Dabbler needing to explain in the first place.
Eh… if you’re thinking of the connotations I think you’re thinking of, those rapidly diminish the more broadly the word is applied to a people. Honestly, the best outcome I can think of for Tom is it’s a translation error. Dabbler’s clearly going to explain some reason succubi *need* to be bound to another being, in which case, maybe the better word in English would be “dependant” but their language uses the same word to mean both. In which case, the “uppity slave” comment could be taken to be more of a “while you’re living under my grounding of the mercurial nature of your being, you will follow my rules”
Also, the entirety of his rules might be “Call me Thothogoth, not Tom”
It does seem to be the one thing that Dabbler says that has continually annoyed him.
And… the Golden Prude is already planning on going back in time and punching the horny (and lonely) wizard in the Gleep
Someone cereally needs to fuck that stick out of her arse… and then shove it back in again over and over and over until she stops being such a sexually repressive bitch!
So, being offended by the idea of someone creating a sapient sex slave that needs sexual energy to live and thus could be made dependent on their slavers is something you think implies being a prude?
As opposed to those wizards just putting an anima or limited AI spell on a sex doll.
Instead they created sapient beings that can reproduce and regardless of the mixed heritage by inheriting the succubus genes they are marked as potential property (unless cleared up in the next page or so).
You think they intended for their sex toys to become sapient?
Sentient? Yes.
Sapient? Also likely yes, but probably to no higher degree than, say, a cat.
Higher order reasoning? Probably not.
I know plenty of people who are sapient without being sentient. They tend to work in government positions.
giving how some people are, it is possible.
It may have been incremental however, but the whole able to reproduce with other species and look like those species (hence Dabbler’s alien appearance) but with horns and such, is a major eyebrow raiser. It is one thing if they were shapeshifters incorporating DNA to better match their “owners” but doing so through reproduction is a whole level of ick like, you just genetically bred your own children to be your future sex slaves or sell them as such.
as I said Dabbler had better have a good explanation for this situation as it has only gotten worse with this addition so far.
Dabbler mentioned no common ancestors. That very clearly implies there is no SINGLE person who made all those decisions, if it was decision at all because it might be like unintended sideefect of stuff two different wizards did. You probably can find someone between the wizards involved in sucubi creation who deserved beating but it wouldn’t be fair to punch all of them.
But it has been shown enough in the comic that Maxima is not prudish.
She finds the whole dating experience lacking, mostly because she predominantly encounters two extremes: the insufferable macho or the fawning fanboy. Neither is particularly attractive.
We have seen her expressing interest in Hiro, even to the point that they had to bring up the problem that she is his commanding officer. She also said as much in the run up to the not-a-date with Deus that she had relationships in the past (and Anvil mentioned that it had been a couple of years since her last date). There were some broader hints that she and Deus had something going on, though apparently it was mostly one side from his side.
She clamps down hard on Dabbler being her succubus self as well as the shenanigans of overly hormonal superhumans, because after all she is commanding a paramilitary fast response unit. A certain degree of professionalism is expected (and in all fairness, she is far more lax than she should be. Though that is for plot reasons, not for realistic portrayal of the commander of such a unit).
She is acting asexual at the moment (likely because the only people she can date and relate with are either her subordinates or her likely opponents. Everybody else the power differential is extremely unbalanced which is neither attractive nor healthy for a relationship for somebody like Maxima who does not want to dominate or control her partner). For her team she is quite permissive, as long as they keep their relationships and kinks reasonably private. Not presumably because she finds it distasteful (there is nothing in the comic where she expresses such an attitude) but because it negatively impacts group cohesion, effectiveness and may be against military regulations. She knows what Dabbler is doing off duty, she knows of the relationship between Heatwave and mr Amorpheus. She knows that Harem is dating (and more than that) four men at the same time. She knows presumably what Sydney and Frizz were doing that last evening he was on earth. She has never given any indication of discomfort, well, other than that Harem was doing the dating plus thing with Deus, and that was not so much because of the plus stuff but rather the fact that she considers Deus a bad boyfriend for Harem and a likely opponent for the team down the road. Harem pointed out that Maxima is not her mother and Maxima dropped the issue there and then.
Sooo … no, not really a prude in the literary sense.
I have seen no evidence of Maxima not being a prude and a lot of evidence that she is, despite her once saying that she is not a prude in protest. Her actions seem to indicate that she is.
I can list many cases of it later when I am at my home computer instead of working.
So you think anal rape is how Max should be dealt with?
I think you need to chill a bit.
And you wonder why Rich banned you from posting on YAFGC, Chill TF out, man.
You really do live down to expectations.
Wtaf is wrong with you? It doesn’t matter that we’re discussing fictional characters, you’re specifically suggested that it’s a good idea for someone to be raped until their attitude changes to align with yours.
You are in serious need of professional help.
jsut saying, Zombie Hand jobs is a great band name
for what?!?!? for one of harem’s sodas? scratch that.
Band name not bRand name
Why does it have to be a handie? Most wizards already have two of those. It’s a ‘hole to plug’ they tend to lack
A wizard’s hands are needed for more important things.
they have to hold their staff somehow.
“A Wizard’s staff has a knob on the end” indeed ;)
Most wizards have at least two holes to plug. It’s a desire to have them plugged instead of the desire to plug others’ holes they lack.
Is it just me, or does Jabberwokky look very different from how she normally looks?
She could have said “Sexy golems” so Sydney’s confusion is understandable.
DaveB if you can work it into the plot I’d love to see Dabbler “On the cover of the Rolling Stone”. Bet you could work her into this famous cover or a variation on it http://img.wennermedia.com/920-width/rs-28464-22586_lg.jpg
If Steam Powered Sex Bot isn’t part of the next vote incentive, we riot.
well, it would be hot.
steampunk sexy gynoids can be found on the internet.
I’m not sure I want to know what can’t be found on the internet. crap. that memory again. another dose of brain bleach.
There is plenty of stuff which can’t be found on the internet and is safe to think about. Granted, none of it is related to sex. Anything related to sex is either on internet, dangerous to think about or both.
Actually years ago I was in a discussion to test just how outlandish a sexual idea we could come up with and give our selves 24 hours (maximum) to find it on the internet. Some of it actually can be found now *Shoggoth maid being one we couldn’t find then, but now looks to have a bit of a following*, all thanks to the growing internet much can still be found.
however even in rounds 2 and 3, (granted last time played was 2018), there was one thing I’d say that we still never found.
Anthropomorphic Vulture girls giving head to zombies (male or futa) *also counting going down on a zombie girl* (round 3 went more vague) but hey, still wasn’t found, so as far as I know that is one thing no one has apparently drawn….
yet zombie eyes ocket sex was (and was a manga at that)…humanity is scary sometimes.
Oh yay more unnecessary exposition.
Eh, I enjoy Dabbler’s Science Corner info dumps.
With how slow the plot moves, I prefer things that move the plot forward… Things like this should be shown, not told.
I actually had the same problem back during the restaurant fight and vehemence fight because it lasted over a year, and I thought ‘god this fight is never going to end, I want to get back to the ‘day in the life of superheroes’ stuff!
But honestly I don’t think that it’s not a fair criticism to make when we criticize how slow the plot moves, and I was wrong to think that back then. Because back then, I did not take into account that the story reads a LOT more smoothly when you binge it than when you are following it in realtime. It’s just the nature of a webcomic compared to a traditional one. It will always feel like it’s moving glacially slower if there’s not a page every day, which is admittedly impossibly impractical for an author to do. No matter what an author does, it’s going to ALWAYS feel like the plot moves forward slowly, unless the author sacrifices coherency for people who are going to either binge it or might buy the comic when it’s completed.
Trust me, the plot feels a lot faster when binging it.
It’s actually why I started going on the forums – because it was a good way to pass the time until the next update while still interacting with one of my favorite webcomics. Part of the draw of this comic is that they DO explain a LOT of stuff that’s usually just accepted as a given in comic books and sci fi and whatnot. It’s the comic’s ‘hook.’
Agreed, and this has been pointed out before it is two pages a week, as opposed to reading eight to twelve all at once in a comic book as an average, some titles even more , even at one issue a month those books have a lot more out each month, which reminder takes multiple writers, penciller, inker, and colorists, heck there is even a separate person to do the word balloons. Two fully colored comic size pages a week by one person is incredible and a hell of a lot more than I’d ever be able to do with life and other projects even if I could draw. So yeah, this is a binger comic over a real time read. Like seeing a work in progress rather than a finished product kind of experience.
But on the plus side, the delay between pages gives us ample time to write hundreds of comments on each
Yes it does. Plus occasionally other people will also comment. :)
(self-burn because I comment a LOT when a page interests me)
The comments are what keep me coming back on a regular basis. Otherwise I’d let pages pile up and binge them, but I don’t want to miss the discussion.
Dave B likes exposition. I usually like it, though sometimes it can drag on a bit. Like for example when they met the furries.
Observation:
Max isn’t wearing her Archon collar.
When did it come off?
She hasn’t been wearing it for most of the arc. IT seemed to go away between 973 and 974.

Oh, you are capable of providing citations in a simple and straightforward manner, without getting off-topic?
Colour me amazed :D
You are literally showing in this very post that I am now responding to that you are not capable of that same thing, on the other hand.
Huh. I didn’t know Marvin the Paranoid Android’s model line had a femme version. Hopefully she’s a bit more upbeat!
…Succubi are descendants from sex golems.
huh.
I assume what she’s leading up to is, because of their origin, succubi require a master to exist/function.
I like how polite Vehemence can be. I think He and Stalwart will get along. I don’t know who I would ship him with though. I would like to see him and dabbler hook up. Sex and Violence are naturals.
#TeamAngrySex
I get the feeling that Kevin bats for the other team, if you know what I’m saying.
I just have to point out that I have no idea what image you used for that blurred panel, but my brain is seeing chicken parm.
Oh Marvin, what have they done to you?!
Necromancy, Necrophillia….Necrophancy? Necromanillia?
“Necro Fancy”
Skeletal minions with Catrina decorations & gilded nails.
I’m amazed that Sydney didn’t say to Tom, “Don’t you have a crossroads to haunt?”
What would Maxims say to Sydney?
I think I recall seeing the Succubi are artificial creations origin before, but it was either as a manifestation of magic that went out of the creator’s control immediately in one or was just a name given to sexdroids in another and not actual demons.
some of my favorite origins have been
*The result of a lust god/goddess breeding with a demon, so their offspring inherited the powers of both parents making them semi-divine (I believe used to excuse the can’t be exorcised and other such immunities aspect),
*Are just regular demons and its a title given to high ranking demons of the Lust circle of Hell.
*are actually the physical manifestations of sexual energy elementals. (this setting I believe made demons and gods interchangeable things so Succubi were the same as nymphs and such). so basically human perception and titles.
Am I the only person to see ” Just take a minute to imagine what a succubus’s experimental phase would consist of” and think “celibacy?” It doesn’t work well due to the “needing tantric energy to live” bit, but what else could be considered an experiment to a succubus?
Actually Dabbler said it was completely possible for a succubus to live all her live without sex and just absorbing residual tantric energy from other person having sex
Possible but extremely unlikely. Given that “succubi love being succubi.”
I’m hoping it was more of a Alchemist’s ‘synthetic’ flesh Homunculi than a Necromancer;s version of a fleshlight golem. Because.. ewww.
yeah this likely more biomancy than necromancy,
being demons, maybe like a Hell *NPC* , the basic functions creepy “not people” the psychological hells will use to fill up spaces. Which I guess pre-gamer days were a lot creepier to interact with. Just repeating the same responses, performing basic repeating actions, or only able to answer basic questions with an intelligence equal to a basic A.I. like an NPC in some of the better games.
someone gets freaky, modifies something like that, get some additions, some variations, at least one weirdo adds reproductive abilities (or this happens as a glitch by trying to be too realistic with the biomancy) and boom, created a new species.
One of the ethical debates about developing genetic engineering technology that works on humans is thinking about what unethical people will do with it (think “ubermensch” or “master race”) and what outright crooks will do with it (think “slave race” and “servitor species”).
And I can’t help thinking that although it’s inevitable that some crook somewhere is going to use genetic engineering to create a genuinely sexually insatiable human female, it’s sort of missing something:
When it comes to human sexual capacity, men can’t keep up. Women can already have and enjoy sex probably twenty times as often as men. Cranking female libido up to eleven isn’t going to solve any problems anyone who might undertake the work actually has. It would more likely create frustrated and resentful women with libido out of all proportion to any partner they could find, and I can certainly imagine them be seeking some kind of revenge against their creators.
When I think of exactly what kind… Um, yeah, frame 8. Just try to get that mental picture out of your head.
We already have slave races.
Dogs and horses are absolutely slave races.
Nevermind the races that we literally breed just so we can kill and eat them.
There’s usually a strong scent of “naturalism” in the opposition to a wide range of subjects, from genetic engineering to medicine to “social engineering” or even just education. People aren’t necessarily opposed to being manipulated so much as they don’t want to know when it’s happening. They have a distaste for “intention”, for things that are constructed or artificial, regardless of whether they’re for better or worse. The assumption itself is that natural is good, and unnatural is bad, regardless of whether they believe in a creator god or some universal laws.
Though as you’ve noted, even some intentional actions, such as breeding for a specific purpose, fall under “natural” means if they don’t think too hard about them.
It’s more like “something that’s been with us a long time or changed very gradually is something we know doesn’t result in immediate catastrophe, something that’s a new invention, not so much.”
The more unpredictable the results of something – the less precedent there is for any changes like it – the more reflexively scared of it some people are going to be. And that’s not entirely irrational.
I’ve thought about it some. I have to try not to resent people for it, and I have to consider their concerns seriously. Considering my job I sort of expect a screaming mob of peasants with pitchforks and torches every time I publish.
Caution is reasonable. The person making something may not have considered all the possible consequences, and probably was only concerned with one, to the exclusion of all others. They may not have your best interests in mind, and again, are probably only concerned with the interests of one person: themselves. So yes, it’s wise to be cautious and suspicious.
That’s not what I’m talking about, however. I’m talking about hostility towards intent, a preference for “natural” outcomes, which usually just is an indication that someone believes they’re benefiting from exploiting a system that hasn’t been examined closely, and wants to deter anyone from examining it for flaws. Say, policies that appear neutral on the surface, but disproportionately benefit certain people, or disadvantage others.
The easiest, more specific sort of example I can give is people complaining about balance changes to a game. The usual refrain is “Don’t tell me how to play”, which is hilarious because all games tell you how to play them by their reward structure, the game’s developer already told the player how to play, and the player resents having to learn a new, more complex set of rules when they feel they’ve already won.
so low key always shipped Dabbler and Max, just kind of on the side, i know nor happening
but seeing Max get so protective of her friend and collogue is both wholesome and exciting
Ooh my gawwd…
So what about panel 8?
Is that trying to show us what those lonely wizards were doing with animated brooms?
If that’s the case, I can understand why DaveB pixelated it.
The Sirius Cybernetics Corporation has a lot to answer for. Share and Enjoy!
so succubi started out as enchanted onaholes that were left to collect dust for too long?
