Grrl Power #962 – Pop gauntlet thrown?
They fixed the specularity, now to just add some subsurface scattering… and surface imperfections, and skin texture so she isn’t walking around looking like she has a photoshop gaussian blur filter on her, maybe some freckles. This choker won’t let them do anything like add that peach fuzz most people have, but I guess that varies pretty wildly from person to person, and also I suppose some women wax their whole face and arms and everything, so it’s not a dealbreaker. A few more tweaks and she’ll be able to get a coffee without getting mobbed by fans or villains.
If someone touched her skin… well, she runs a few degrees hotter than a regular human, and her skin is both smoother and has that microscopic forcefield over it. It actually diffuses heat (as well as gamma lasers and bullets) so I’m not actually sure what she would feel like temperature wise. Like, if you touch an aluminum surface, at least one that indoors and not baking in the sun, it feels colder than room temperature because it’s a far more efficient heat conductor than the air, so it pulls heat from your hand. But what if the aluminum was constantly being heated to 101 degrees, (Fahrenheit, obviously) but also had one end stuck in a bowl of ice water? Basically the heat would be constantly convecting from one side of the aluminum to the other, but my question is, would it feel warm or cold?
So yeah, that’s what Max feels like. Warm but also weirdly cool. Or maybe warm but cool over time. But still warm. Also a little slippery, because of the force field. She isn’t frictionless, just slightly more slippery, like she’s just starting to perspire. But not in the way that makes her clothes cling to her. It’s like… if normal human skin has 100 friction units, Max has, I dunno, 85.
But I think the important takeaway from this page is, if you’re ever dating someone with a snout, at some point in the relationship, the idea of muzzling them will cross your mind. Whether it’s because they’re saying something dumb or for kinky reasons, it will definitely cross your mind.
Heh, Sydney almost has to fly to get up that high. Hmm. You know, I didn’t actually measure that before I drew this page. She’s 5′, he’s 7′. ((/me quickly runs downstairs)) Okay, my wife is exactly 5′, and she could juuust touch the 7′ mark without jumping. Given that Frix’s snout isn’t at the very top of his head, I think Sydney could grab it.
July’s vote incentive is up!
You guys don’t know who this is yet. (Her name is Xerxa.) I will give you one single guess what she might be from. (And no, it’s not Dabbler’s mother.) It was a piece I had half finished from a little while ago and given my time constraints this month, I threw a little polish and some background on it and here you are. Unfortunately there aren’t nine separate versions because she’s not wearing a ton to begin with. Hopefully you can read about that soon. I hope you like it, personally I think it turned out pretty good.
As always, nude version are up at Patreon.
Double res version will be posted over at Patreon. Feel free to contribute as much as you like.
Okay, I admit, I remember the zebra. Didn’t know it had a name however.
I vaguely remember the zebra too.
If you remember who the Frosted Flakes mascot was before Tony the Tiger … you’re old.
LOL
They tried a number of mascots; the Fruit Stripe Gum Man was an anthropomorphic gum pack with limbs and a face, the animals included a zebra, tiger, elephant, and mouse. “Yipes” was the one that stuck in peoples’ heads and outlasted the others.
The name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t think from where until I saw her mention it. then I was like ooh i do remember that.
I didn’t know that was why the ad said “Yipes,” but I do remember the zebra.
“Yipes, stripes! Fruit stripe gum…”
Where’s the chain that’s normally around that woman with the magic book?
It’s around her waist usually.
Usually, yes, but panel 4 shows the book is free at last :)
Which is why I’m asking where’s the chain. It’s missingbin both panels 4 and 6. With 6 I can argue its just below the panel cutoff but in panel 4, her entire waist is visible and there is bo chain anywhere.
It’s under the dress, which is why it’s strapped to her back
Ellie has a name by the way, other than “That woman with the magic book” :P
if it’s under the dress, then where’s the part of the chain linking the book to her? There’s not even a single link shown.
Also thanks, I forgot Ellie’s name. I was about to start calling her Bookie McBookerson.
I’m thinking the chain is still around her waist, just under the wrap/belt part of the dress. Unless Dave just forgot it.
Seems unlikely. In the past we’ve always seen the chain when she’s wearing a dress. Plus if it was under the dress, and the chain was going to the book by going down under the dress then up again, basically the back of her skirt would be getting pushed up by the chain and that would look… weird.
Plus again – even the book doesnt show even the slightest bit of a chain link anywhere. There’s not even a buldge where the chain would be, under her dress.
Up her back
She is listed on the page, in the Who’s Who, can’t miss her… actually, guess you did :P
I was on my phone and the who’s who wasnt showing up.

oh. Plus on this page, you can clearly see that the chain is NOT under her dress. Last panel.

No Guesticules…. I just checked a few pages back. The chain is NOT under her dress.

Last panel… you can see the chain around her waist as she looks at Leon.
Well spotted, definitely some chain there – looks like Dave just forgot. If it were hidden inside though, the chain would certainly be running up her back, not out under the skirt.
If it had been running up her back, we’d have seen part of the chain on the book btw.
Plus not sure how she’d have gotten her dress on
Magic… Is involved… Probably against its will.
No, it’s pretty clearly an art error. Like I said, we’ve already seen in comic #961 that she DOES have a chain aroun her waist, which is over, not under, her dress.
You sure that’s the chain and not the corner of the book? Looks closer to the colour of the book than chain
As to how she got the dress on over the chain: how do you get a dress on over your underwear?
The top half of the dress looks like a ‘wraparound’: pull the bottom part up to her waist, put the top part on like a shirt over the chain
“You sure that’s the chain and not the corner of the book? Looks closer to the colour of the book than chain”
I considered that so I zoomed in on the picture and no, it’s three links of a chain around her waist.
“As to how she got the dress on over the chain: how do you get a dress on over your underwear?”
The book is really pig. Seems very uncomfortable to pull the book up the top of the dress to get it through it, behind your back, to have a chain pressing against your back between your back and the dress and at the back of your neck (since chains have, yknow, weight), then going downward to basically pull down at the neck of your dress while still having that V-neck of the dress.
And like I said, we already see the chain in the comic I mentioned.
Occam’s razor. The simplest, most obvious answer is DaveB just forgot the chain.
pig=big
Sidney please, shutting someone’s mouth like that is incredibly rude and domineering.
Sounds like you have never met Sydney before
At least she’s not grabbing him by the tongue. :)
Dabbler would have used other bits.
Honk.
At least I think that was the onomatopoeia. :)
I think Frix would be into it. Or at least willing to try new things. :)
“Given that Frix’s snout isn’t at the very top of his head, I think Sydney could grab it.”
I think it’s drawn perfectly: Sidney can reach, but she has to stretch for it.
It IS a very rude way to treat poor Frix, but this is Sidney, and he’s a good sport (usually).
47.
I remember Yipes.
I also remember Bazooka Joe.
And Popsicle Pete.
I remember Reddy Kilowatt.
Chief Strike Anywhere?
Never heard of Yipes (probably a local thing), have heard of Bazooka Joe (because it came with jokes, right?), was Popsicle Pete part of the Popsicle Band?
Anyone heard of the ‘Munch Bunch’?
I missed the Munch Bunch. They fell between my own childhood and having kids of my own. I do remember when Capt. Crunch had an actual crew and an arch enemy. Also the ever classic and politically incorrect Frito Bandito.
Ah yes, the Frito Bandito!!!! OMG the memories.
I got that reference! Does that make me old? XD
So…Max feels like silk sheets?
Do dogs feel like bones?
Sydney did mention once that Maxima actually felt surprisingly warm, even though she expected her to feel colder. Back when she hugged her after coming back from deep space.
Specifically, Sydney says, “Wow, I bet people think your skin would be cold because you look like metal, but you’re really warm.”
Panel 5 in the comic below:

for the aluminum, the heat adjustment already has been adjusted for. For context, have myself personally taken a welding course, and have personally encountered welding rods explicitly made to weld aluminum. and Yes I both want and desire you to be insert grammatically correct spelling of sceptical here. My mistakes, such as they are, can and will probably be corrected by anal retentiveness such as a proportion, note the hard emphasis on some, not all geeks, nerds various classifications of sub types therein, are known for.
I liked that gum.
Its still available pretty much at every supermarket and cvs and a lot of dollar stores:)
Frix is blep.
So how old is Max anyway?
It’s hard to tell her age because she’s all shiny and wrinkle-free. Is she aging relatively slowly as a side-effect of her powers?
Krona b smol.
Yes, she makes Sydney feel tall (which is why they became friends, poor Pixilicious not so much seeing how they were around the same height and had similar eyes as Sydney)
I <3 Frix. I hope he doesn't get sent away.
Nah, Sydney don’t get that reference, she is ‘being called-out’ on nerd-cred
Sometimes the notes are better than the comic. Using your wife for anatomical reference is the best.
My wife is 5’1″, my Dad is 6’7″. Not an exact duplicate, but I can totally see the resemblance from here.
Poor Maxi, she is letting her guard down and her nerdity is slipping out :(
*adds Pathfinder books to the base library*
…soon.
Okay please explain. Pathfinder books?
I’m assuming they’re Roleplaying books (I have roleplaying books but mainly a LOT of White Wolf, a few AD&D, a few Abberant, a Paranoia book, a Shadowrun book, and a Champions book – nothing called Pathfinder), but not sure of the tie-in to the comic. :)
Pathfinder is what D&D turned into, only good thing about it is that it is better than 5e
In what way(s), would you say?
(An honest question, not trying to imply otherwise. I know that Pathfinder sort-of forked from D&D3.5e, but having only played a few sessions of 5e and no Pathfinder or earlier editions I don’t have the basis to compare them myself.)
Gratuitous nerdity?
Sorry to be “that guy”, but im curious now… how would Max’s microscopic force field affect her love life? Does or could the field act as a barrier contraceptive? Could it protect her from other contact attacks, like acid splash, goopey sneezes, the old riacin handshake tape, or even the ‘Rona?
Is it just me, or was Frix about to tell the story of what he said to Mable?
No, it was to Roger.
Hey! +2 for covering subsurface scattering, like I mentioned in the comments 4 pages back. Very necessary to avoid that “uncanny valley” effect when doing photorealistic rendering.
Also, wow, Fruit Stripe gum. That’s a throwback for me. I used to like that gum when I was a kid, except for the fact that the flavor lasted like five minutes, tops… if you were lucky. Due to that, Juicy Fruit, Hubba Bubba, or Big League Chew (which I’m utterly shocked is still made) were preferred instead.
Is it just me or is Fruit Stripes not available anywhere outside of New York, because I see it all the time in stores.
Btw, the trick is to chew 4 pieces at once to make the flavor last :)
Countdown to Sydney pointing out they should be putting the magic disguise into a pair of glasses, if you’re gonna do some Clark Kenting, you should go all the way
I guess no one knows the STILL make that gum… and it STILL has the five color zebra on the pack.
I’ve mentioned this in several posts. :)
No one is seeming to acknowledge it though for some reason. I was thinking maybe the gum is only locally popular on the East Coast or something, sort of like Tempt Tee Cream Cheese, but I have family in California, Texas, and Hawaii who say it’s at the stores there as well. :)
That being said I never knew the zebra had a name.
I’m almost at the point where I want to buy a 5 pack of Fruit Stripe gum and send it to DaveB. :)
Not sure he’d accept foodstuffs from some rando reader of his comic though.
Btw if you do, DaveB, let me know and I will definitely send you some Fruit Stripe gum. I’m not kidding.
It only came in 10 packs.
I am a bit disappointed Woof wasn’t saying “So I says to Mavis I says…” in that last panel
omg what a missed opportunity :D
Btw DaveB, I did a science experiment RL for your benefit, because apparently I have a lot of time on my hands on the weekend and nothing better to do, which is probably a poor commentary on my life.
I heated up crumpled up aluminum foil on one end and put it in ice water on the other end. It wound up making the water warmer so I’m assuming that the answer to your question is heat transfers to the cold part, not the other way around.
You actually did that hand motion, clamping a snoot shut with a hand mid sentence, to yourself to get the sound it would make… didn’t you? :-P
That’d put Maxima between 35 and 43.
This page made me laugh out loud
Ouch, I grew up in the 90’s so I do feel a little called out XD
I remember the zebra, Maxima. I also remember it had a (flash?) game that was some cheap, slow, side-scrolling adventure where the player looked like Indiana Jones.
