June Vote Incentive
The story behind this picture: Fred has a character in Gold Digger named Empress Lynn. At some point when she was younger she was lost in a dimension of incredibly dangerous thingsTM. She only survived by becoming incredibly tough and along the way she met Subtracto, a sentient flying silver orb. Subtracto doesn’t function anything like Sydney’s power orbs, the similarities are entirely cosmetic, but the idea of them meeting amused me. See it here.
I know I keep talking about Gold Digger, and not everyone out there is familiar with it, but if you like Grrl Power I think you’d like Gold Digger as well, it’s every bit as crazy but there’s also a plot, hah hah. The best place to get is is this DVD which collects all the books up to #125 of the color series, and has the 50 black and white comics, as well as the 4 issues that launched the series and a bunch of other side books, and it’s only $40, which is an incredible deal for that much entertainment. All of it drawn and written by the same guy, which may be some sort of record to be honest.
cool, i should probably find and read gold digger to understand it better but i like it
I have to say that if you like my comic I think you’d like Gold Digger. It’s considerably less zany – don’t get me wrong it’s still very funny, a recent issue had leprechauns and pixies breaking out of a maximum security prison, and they wound up interrupting a UFC style fight in giant mecha suits… well giant to them, but basically human sized. One of the suits was “Vaultron” a suit made up of smaller robots that are all shoes, you know, cause leprechauns and elves have a thing for shoes… you know what, it’s probably every bit as zany. It’s just that there’s plot as well so that’s what throws me.
Hey could you be so kind as to direct some one who is interested in reading gold digger as to where it could be found?
The DVD Keiya is referring to is this: https://www.amazon.com/Fred-Perrys-Digger-GD-rom-2-disc/dp/B005K0H3W8 I know $75 sounds like a lot but if you like to read comics on your computer, then this is a great deal, it’s basically all of Gold Digger, the first 50 issues that were done in black and white, and I believe up to the first 75 color issues (Gold Digger is at about 140 issues in color now). The DVD may be your best bet to catch up on the story, which is absolutely worth it IMO.
If you prefer meatspace comics, then look for the Gold Bricks, which are collections of the books bound in large volumes. Vol 1 you can get used for $50, the others are priced about the same, but remember they’re 25 comics bound together so it’s still a pretty good price.
For smaller collections, there are the pocket manga, and recently he’s started putting out the Platinum collections, which are whole story arcs bound up in a more reasonable sized collections, 4-6 issues, but they start with the color run I think. Turns out that’s probably the size I’ll be shooting for when I compile Grrl Power into a book.
And I’ll mention, I would probably skip the animated movie he did. It’s really only for superfans, because literally, he did it himself. He animated a 30 minute cartoon by himself over 10 years, I think the only other names in the credits are voice actors and some music contributions. It’s… rough. It gets pretty good towards the end honestly, but he was learning as he was going. It’s fascinating to watch if you’re really interested in one man projects or the art of animation, but… well, start with the books.
I’ll see if I can find a better price on the DVD collection anywhere.
Sweet thanks
Here I finally found the current collected DVD on AP’s site. It’s not easy to find. They need to rework their store, but here it is, and only $40, nearly 200 of IMO one of the best comics ever.

I can back this up! My friend and I, on Dave’s recommendation at A-Kon, picked up a pair of DVDs with the first twenty years or so on them. I’ve been reading it ever since, great stuff.
I just love Fred’s art, I can reconize it anywhere.
I have been reading GD I belive from the 1st issue. I came across it since I was a fan of Ninja High School and got almost any comic from Antartic Press. Gotta support the home town publishers.
GAAH!! The Legs! Why don’t they stop?!
Seriously, is it perspective or are the proportions supposed to be that badly off? I don’t think either of them can touch their own toes….
I agree Syd, this pic is definitely a Win!
I love the pix. Only wish it were in color.
A sentient flying orb, eh? A bit like Dies Horribly and Klick from Goblins. Except Klick has arms, and can’t say anything but “Klick.” Actually, a completely different thing again, really. Love the match-up, though.
This actually reminds me of the “Bit” from TRON… which, BTW, was even more entertaining in the book…
Congratulations on your #1 ranking as of this comment! :)
Thanks! I’m still blown away that I have enough enthusiastic readers to accomplish that. I’m not trying to be falsely modest, it’s just that there’s a LOT of webcomics out there and some of them have huge audiences. I really appreciate the votes. The more time I spend in the top 10, the more people find the comic, and building a big audience is important if I’m ever going to take a stab at making a living off this.
I’m strongly reminded by both these characters of the original Vaughn Bodé character ‘5Ply’ with his Doom Marble floating protectively by his head. The girls should get trained by the classic!
Badgers for Harem! Badgers for Harem!
Hey. Could Harem take the telepresence sub-orb with her?
That’s a good question. I haven’t figured that out yet. The answer is probably whichever result is funnier when the time comes.
I love Fred Perry and all his works. It’s been like 10-15 years since I read a comic of his. The last thing I remember were drastic changes to my favorite character, Brianna, as the curse was going crazy. That made me sad.
I seem to remember a funny scene where Lynn uses Subtracto as transportation =p Maybe that was just a commission.
That was in the comic, she was trying to straddle him, only a planar dragon or something had just breathed fire on him, so she had to flip over and balance on the pommel of her sword.
The Brianna stuff got resolved, though all the characters have continued to evolve. She’s still a gun toting nut though.
Thankyou for telling me about the DVD, it arrived today! Love Gold Digger
Great! Fred needs more press. I keep telling him he needs to turn one of his comics into a proper webcomic for exposure. He’s doing his Level Up one on his DeviantArt page on and off, but DA and Tumblr are terrible navigation experiences for comics I think.
Someone needs to tell Math to stop stealing Vegeta’s hairstyle.
All the GD fans here (and there seem to be a few of you, woot!) should join the FB page I created for Fred’s works: https://www.facebook.com/groups/322249027200/
It boggles my mind that Fred is not among the best known comics creators on the planet.
Yeah, I just realized FB basically kicked everybody out of the group when it got migrated >_< Thanks SO much, FB…
But hey, this is a good opportunity to rebuild it! Everyone who digs any of Fred's work is welcome to come chat about it.
On a completely unrelated note (and I apologize for spamming the thread), I can’t see the actual image. I went to the site and voted but it never shows me the image. I wanna seeeee it =\
Thats because It is July now, not June, there is a new vote incentive up, looks like you missed it sadly.
Yeeeah, I don’t usually read the bloggy bits, just the comics. =\ I are teh sad.
That said, I didn’t get to see whatever the current incentive image is either, unless there isn’t one?
The current is just a banner thing.
The current one is the new header over at the Grrl Power facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/GrrlPowerComic
I put the old vote incentives up at the DeviantArt page. https://davebarrack.deviantart.com/
Ah! Well, then I would have got to it eventually anyway. Thanks! ^_^
Less butt shots, more boob shots plz. (also hoping for boob size consistency which is one of the top 5 most forgotten things in webcomics)
Plus did you notice how there isn’t any nipples and how some boob pairs look like butts to a degree??
I am so glad you got hooked up with fred perry! I have been following his stuf forever. one of these days I hope to meet him my self. I have been following you for quite some time too and your art style has great appeal to me.
Thanks! My art has definitely been influenced by him. I’ve been reading Gold Digger since the beginning.
I just picked up GD Platinum volume 3 yesterday… I collect the singles, but I love getting the trades and getting to reread the story arcs all together and picking up on nuances I missed the first time around. Also I just lent a curious friend my GD-ROMs so he could take the plunge.
Oh, also for those wanting to dive in deep, the first two Gold Bricks are super cheap on the Antarctic website right now, thanks to some minor printing errors… check it out!
Lessons to take from this comic page: In Grrl Power world, being a demonologist gets you laid like tile.
