Grrl Power #484 – Queue miniboss fight music
That thing may have its second wind, but it’s pretty outnumbered at this point, even if most of the gallery has cleared out. But maybe it has some more tricks up its tattered sleeves now that its powered up.
I think I may have commented on this before, but oh well, if I have it’s been years. Speaking of no one liking fire, I remember seeing in a Champions RPG book once a sample Dracula character, and being a point based system, arch villains would get a bonus pool of points to work with, but also usually buy some additional weaknesses to boost their total even more. Stuff like Overconfidence or Megalomania, and physical weaknesses too, “Powers Don’t Work on the Color Green” or “Dies when Staked Through Heart.” When I initially read that, I didn’t think much of it. Of course Drac “Dies when Staked Through Heart,” he’s a vampire. It wasn’t until I had a refrigerator logic moment later than I realized that my character had that weakness too, (in fact, nearly every superhero and villain and civilian has it) and I asked the GM if I could get the same 60 extra points to spend that Drac got because of my own terrible weakness to stakes. Wisely he said no, but this page made me think about that.
Yeah, no one likes being attacked with fire. Of course, having a vulnerability to fire is different than dying outright from major organ trauma, but just because vampires take 50% extra damage from fire (they can buy it down with blood powers as they get older, but not below 25%… if you’re the type that needs hard numbers) it doesn’t mean regular folk like being hit in the face with a torch or a molotov.
In Dabbler’s defense, she is a demon, and they actually have a noticeable resistance to fire, so Gunnhildr’s vulnerability to it is especially pronounced from her point of view.

argh this was supposed to reply to O B Juan
It’s only a tri-core not a quad-core mannequin. Well, on the bright side, all the cores (except the one that exploded) are in one place. Much easier to wrangle. Dabbler, where’s your myolinear ribbons?
It’ll probably dig out faster than Max if it wasn’t destroyed…
I’m just curious about the spike that dabbler was wanting to keep…
Apparently, except for whatever utility it had as a weapon, any enhanced abilities it may have exhibited were due to the sword-shard embedded in the manikin. Examining those shards should be the priority.
Why didn’t whoever sent them just grab someone off the street and use their blood to power the homonculi before sending them in, instead of gambling that they woupd be able to get blood during their attack?
I think you’re assuming the masterminds thought the grenade surprise attack and then a wave of decently armed murderquins would have the sum total effect of temporarily disabling a werehare.(I guess most council member’s don’t have bullet speed speedster powers) They had plenty of energy for all that and if they hadn’t of been pieced out and riddled with holes probably would have kept going for some time. The extra blood just seems to come in handy for plan “B” which is some kind of super charged ultimate form attack. (which could just faceplant comically since we are all expecting it to actually be able to do something after V’s whole getting bigger and badder all the time shtick)
But more than likely the attempted supernaturally reactive material laced explosions (which doesn’t necessarily provide lots of blood if not close enough but does stun and seriously distract supernaturally powered beings? Sure they thought some of the weaker ones would die as well.), magic vacuum trap, poison, as well as more mundane booby traps (hidden blades) and ability to gather up undamaged parts to keep going just that all important wee bit longer are all designed to keep the bulk of the more important/powerful supernatural/alien/whatever council agents tied up while the group responsible sends someone to hit the real target which might be another Sigil or could be a better armed attack on some of the agents who were to be responsible for investigating/defending the sabotage on other Sigils while their overpowered lords and ladies can’t rally to their aid.
Heck, if they do start targeting the higher level agents (VI’s and such) maybe that, and even the whole Sigil sabotage thing, is just to eventually create a believable situation for the direct intervention of the most powerful council members which I assume are also the leaders of their various factions. So actually a straight up coup rather than a terrorist action to affect one specific change (revelation to the humans).
Well, that went kinda far afield.
Perhaps there’s some quality average blood is lacking?
So do you think the controller has the sword hilt/grip?
And if so is this a normal function of this particular sword? (breaking apart to be used as power sources and recombining later?)
Or did somebody waste a perfectly good magic sword on this easily blunted attack.
I think they do have the hilt. And they did cut up the sword to add extra power to their mannequins. The pieces aren’t jagged. Perfectly segmented pieces don’t happen like that when most things break. The sword must have been artifact level to retain power after it was destroyed. Or perhaps the mage who created these things cut a sword into segments, then enchanted the pieces with the blood drinking ability.
How big was the sword before it was broken? That might give us an idea of how many more of these things there are… Unless it was a blood drinking dagger.
If its an artifact powerful enough to retain power when broken/cut up then I bet it will recombine and we will see its true power in the hands of its owner later on. (some years from now)
I’m hoping against some random sword being a component in a spell as that would not be as interesting even though it paints the mage as good at what they do.
From the width you wouldn’t think it was crazy long so anywhere from your bloody dagger to a regular long sword?
The cross helm seems to only want the cores after one of them has tasted blood. Only the single mannequin has drawn blood. Of three different people. But it did retrieve the one from the shot mannequin as well. Maybe sending four mannequins was for redundancy.
If the pieces just act like blood energy batteries, it just gains a bit more power from each piece. So, I think it’s an artifact because one of those pieces didn’t get any blood at all. The helm could be reassembling them inside.
Another question is: What happened to the core inside the one that exploded? If it is an artifact, that piece is now trapped beneath several tons of rock and earth. It may take a long time to reassemble the full blade.
Now I just envision Maxima tunneling carefully through the earth, trying not to undercut any foundations or what not, and this little sword bit is sneaking along in her wake. She senses something, maybe the small amount of air displaced in its passage, and whips around but since she didn’t use super speed (keeping armor up for digging and in case of further cave ins) it manages to keep behind her head. LOL Its the little things that amuse me I swear…
That’s a lovely image! Thank you for telling us about it…
^_^
No Sydney! Focus!
Optimist…
She is focused, on answering the rhetorical question :P
everyone who’s human look like they have a cold
Artistic style
Dabbler needs to take it easy with the fire sword. Even if she did manage to incapacitate it by setting it on fire, they are in a confined space. Several hundred pounds of burning plastic is going to give off a lot of toxic smoke.
I thought they were supposed to be wooden?
In my head I was going with the ‘Mythbuster’ style dummy with a metal skeleton and a rubberized plastic torso. They could name this fight “Myth Wars III – Revenge of the Buster”. But alas, the good guys must triumph, and this battle will probably be known as ‘Buster’s Last Stand”.
Now I want to see Halo pulverize those dolls like … entirely. and everyone staring at the one ‘normal’ girl in the bunch like ‘wtf was that’? …though I have no idea what she could do to pull that off!
If we assume the whole “visible lasers work like light” thing to hold true, even the lightest touch of PPO to the visor slits would end up ricocheting around inside and vapourising the shards. Nice shiny metal certainly has its weaknesses.
She hasn’t had a chance to train for a ‘light’ touch, and she’s far too excited to take a shot in an enclosed area anyway. Depending on how much power the shards have, keeping on pounding it into the ground till it can’t regenerate may be the best choice…..
Also given how easily the ppo sliced the tank armor it would probably just slice the helmet.
True, it’s probably not subject to laser laws in the desired way.
I believe about 16 tons was the Lighthook’s upper limit?
At least right now. Upgrades might improve it…..
well… she IS another day older… but she sure as HECK ain’t in DEBT!!!…
With so much good stuff out there, and her poor impulse control, would you really bet on that?
She’s only on day four and has been pretty busy. Just wait till she has time to hit the Fleabay comic auctions…..
She had enough common sense not to buy herself that horse, after all. That and the fact that the government is apparently throwing bales of money at every member of the team, Sydney included, suggests that the Queen Of Salt should be all right.
Besides, if worse comes to worse, she’s always got Archon’s financial adviser, Mr. Aurelius Shrapnel to help her out.
She doesn’t actually know how to buy a horse, but you can be sure she knows where to buy rare comics. Mr. Shrapnel would be good if it occurs to Sydney to treat them as investments and not as geek cred….
Feel like syd’s making quite a smug face in that first panel..
due to no fear of fire..
or cause she see’s a cosmic hacked wedgie. albiet not knowing the hack bit
She’s in geek nirvana right now….
i see by the first panel that dabler’s armor change is working as per its full intended functionality.
The attackers have been shown to have built in booby traps. Too bad they are not flesh and blood. Dabbler could have tried to hypnotize them using her own built in ‘booby’ trap.
I miss too much Anvil… Will she be in the next vote incentive?
I miss drawing her too. I don’t know about the next V.I. but maybe the next one after that, assuming I can ever finish the current one. :/
Suddenly an explosive arrow sticks out of the visor, causing a blast that pulverizes the head and sends the pieces flying.
So this guy officially just turned into a B grade DBZ movie villain(Android 13).
Hey. He had a fantastic trucker hat, AND he punched Goku in the balls.
He was a GREAT villain.
Good villain at best. A great one would have used energy beams.
Now the TeamFourStar version of the second Freezer movie is stuck in my head.
Mannequins assemble!
somebody has to say it… “Second round, FIGHT!”
*Third.
Awhile back,I made a comment on how Sydney dreams of her and the other ARCSwat members are cast into rolls of that Mexican sitcom El Chavo…? Check out this intro video…

Wait, did they really get Benny Hill to star in that show? o_O
what is Kat doing?
Clearly, she’s … relatively unharmed and flailing comically … Seems to be a running theme. ;P
Clover is lifting her up, if that’s what you meant.
Oh, and she’s pushing against Clover with one arm and foot.
I like how Dresden Files does it. You buy a ‘Immunity” and then a “Catch” to that immunity.
Like, Dracula would have “Does not die if he is killed”, and then “Catch: Stake through the heart works.”
These guys would have Immunity: Must be shattered into pieces.
Of course, at least one Dresden Files guy has “Immunity: Everything known.”
Everything known is pretty simple to counter: “I kill [insert character name].” “How?” “I don’t know.” “Ok, you succeed.”
Though the Dresden Files makes it clear that even ‘Immunity: Everything known’ isn’t enough to make you truely invulnerable because the three Swords always count as fulfilling the catch no matter what it is.
See Nicodemus, great when fighting Upright honourable warriors of god, almost killed by a single investigative sneaky mage (without the use of magic.)
Bless you Sydney, and your med addled? mind.
its at 3/4 of its ultimate form also sydnet remember you can see where the shards are and what they are powering.
But vamps in the stories do not die from just staking, that is to hold them down while their head is lopped off. All that staking to kill came from fiction stories just as sunlight hurting vamps came from the movie “Nosferatu”. Other shows like Buffy didn’t help either. It is fun when people use popular culture when they come across such things and find they do not work. Like silver doesn’t hurt vampires until now. Bothersome, I blame the “Blade” films for pushing it. It is definitely faster on screen so they others picked up on it to use for their own versions of mythology. Most often they miss the heart hitting too far left of it since it is in the center of the chest under bone! And the persistence of brain eating as an offshoot of the main trunk line of hungry dead reanimated. At least the Kathoga in the film “Relic” had a reason, needed that hormone from the hypothalamus to live.
I think some vampire is behind this, so they better do some serious smooth as silk talking to make it look like they weren’t behind it.
No, it was the Priest seen in the group Villain shot, Gunnie and the other guy (can’t remember his name right now) are fifth in line
I honestly don’t know if its the priest or not, sides if it WAS the priest don’t you think he would of had holy weapons to use against them rather then blood magic? No its a vampire that is involved, never trust them blasted bloodsuckers.
Sydney, enthusiastic to the end. :-)
