Grrl Power #168 – A harsh lesson in orb management
I don’t know why I gave Sydney an explodey cutting beam. Drawing cross sections of things is a pain in the butt.
There was lots of discussion of Dragonball Z in the comments last week, so I thought I’d link this – A group called Team Four Star has taken DBZ and edited it down to just the important parts (they get all the way up to the androids in just a few hours), then redubbed it (really well I might add – even if the first few episodes are a little rough) and it’s really funny.
Grrl Power is now available on Comic Chameleon, which is an iPhone app that lets you read webcomics one panel at a time, which is ideal for the small screen. (An iPad and Android version is coming) The other nice thing about the app is that 2/3 of the ad revenue they make on the app comes back to the comic author. A paid, ad free version of the app is in the works too. I think it’s just two guys making it. Really the coolest thing about the app for me is that Grrl Power is now listed alongside some rather notable comics like Girls with Slingshots, Dumbing of Age, Chainsaw Suit, Oglaf, etc. The only drawback to the app is that someone has to set up the panels for you to advance through. In this case my wife sacrificed a whole Saturday, like literally 12 hours doing it.
In other news, I lost a hard drive this weekend (two actually… sort of – I won’t bore you with the gory details.) The comic is all in my Dropbox so I didn’t lose anything critical, but I did lose all day Saturday and a few hundred bucks reinstalling Windows, Paint Tool SAI, Illustrator, etc. The next page might have spartan backgrounds or something, I’m not sure how losing a day will affect my schedule yet. On top of that, I renewed the hosting for the comic for another 5 years, so there went my portable drawing tablet fund. That being the case I’d like to point out that if you’ve ever had the urge to support the comic (besides liking/tweeting/telling your friends) the Amazon link in the “What I’m Reading” widget is a great way to do that. You don’t have to buy the book I have linked, just visit Amazon via that link and buy whatever you were going to buy anyway in the same browsing session, and it will drop a few pennies in my hat. Well, it’s a percent of what you buy, like… 6%, unless a lot of people are referred through the link then it goes up… there’s a chart. It doesn’t cost you a dime extra. Anyway if you were planning on getting a next gen console through Amazon, or a $5,000 plasma TV, or maybe even doing all your Christmas shopping there. You know. Just saying.
Edit: With so much else going on I forgot to post this. I recorded myself coloring this page -well, 2 hours of it anyway – which means I got though the foreground characters. The coloring was done in Paint Tool SAI. It’s not sped up or anything as I was trying to show the exact process. Here’s the link.
Love the comic, why must people pick it apart with criticism??
Because they can.
What, you’ve never been on this interweb thing before?
Look right here on the side of the cable modem box.
See the label?

Where be the shenanigans in this recipe? i see not one hint of shenanigans
The shenanigans were taken out of the box by a small, childish hacker and used (or abused) as a toy. You know, the prize inside the box. That’s never exactly quite what it looks like. Or does what it’s supposed to.
Not to nit pick.. well ok I am nit picking. Everyone lives at home, is homeless, or their home is where they are. I have been all three. I think you might have meant to say with their parents as an adult. That isn’t as suddenly popular as people make it out to be either. Perhaps it is an indication of a lack of mental or social ability. I think it is shallow people who never figured out how to build and instead only tear things apart. Just remember, some days you are the dog, others the hydrant.
Because constructive criticism (the thing that’s happening here) is what makes things better
Most of the criticism here is of the friendly sort. And Dave B. himself has supported most of it by responding both positively and humorously. Think of it more as free editing and you can begin to understand. Everyone needs an editor to catch mistakes and good natured critiques can make a better product. Believe me when someone is commenting negatively and out of hand they will be dealt with quickly and as politely as possible. Most people here love the comic and try to help make it better. Dave B. has taken quite a few suggestions and fixed errors he didn’t catch due to this positive interaction.
I now rechristen Sydney’s energy orb to be:
The Likebutta beam emitter….
Shouldn’t that be “The Likebutta beam emittah”?
I think Panel 5 is my favorite shot of Maxima so far. 6 and 7 are also awesome. Her internal dialogue would be, “5) Yes, I *am*, in fact, a completely awesome hero. 6) AND a responsible team leader! 7) And Sydney is on my team *sigh*”
Am I the only one who wishes this were a monthly physical title? I’d add it to my stack, no worries. I can’t wait for the graphic novel to come out! (What do you mean, there’s no graphic novel?!? Why not?!? How can I buy it if it doesn’t exist?!?)
Viktor would be proud Sydney.
Von Doom?
I wonder if this concludes the demonstration portion of the press conference, as I can’t imagine how anyone would manage to top this.
Sydney excised a corner of the tank.
Max has most of a tank to obliterate. This is her message: mess with arc, and you being more powerful than a tank won’t mean squat.
Without a destroyed tank, there is only posturing.
With great power comes great comic relief.
X d6 ranged attack, linked with 1/2 X d6 1 Hex Area of Effect transform :”Cause Humorous side effect”, random delay from 1 to 300 seconds. Side effect, X d6 Aide to transform based on number of witnesses to potential mayhem.
Funny thing is that Sidney could just let go of her forcefield orb for a second to get rid of all the sand.
I rather suspect Sydney hasn’t caught up yet to her current situation, rather is replaying the last 5 or so seconds in her mind asking ‘What the heck?”
It’s also been suggested that she doesn’t need to let go of the orb, just mental shut down the shield.
Hum…
Bits of debris striking the outside of the sphere bounce.
Implied:
Bits of debris (or gunfire) that strike the inside of the sphere bounce.
Mind where you discharge weapons when the shield is involved
it is possible it can be calibrated to allow objects to go OUT but not IN.
possible, yes. Likely? Not on this green earth.
Right, but this isn’t located on this green Earth or blue one either. Different universe very similar to this one except they have supers and we don’t (Goddess knows I’ve tried hard enough and I’m damn near as indestructible as Wolverine given this Earth’s biology).
Something I’ve always wondered (not at all relevant to this page) is, Achilles. Is his name pronounced in the English way (uh-kill-eez), or the French way (ah-sheel)?
Uh-kill-eez, I would expect, assuming his name was drawn from the Greek Mythical hero, known for being essentially indestructible, barring his one weak spot, his heel. On a side note, also the origin of the term ‘Achilles Heel’ as a way of describing something as a person, or objects, single major weakness.
I always pronounced it Ah Kill eez.
Same here

Am I the only one who caught the face in the debris cloud, or am I seeing things?
It is a human nature thing to see faces everywhere we look. Travis Hanson another web-story producer actively adds them to his art in subtle and not so subtle ways.

Nice save.
Maxima’s hip/chest relation looks off in the action panel. Not sure how, though… Maybe her waist it too tight/thin, or her hips too high up? :/ Blargh.
Love the final panel! :D
I think her waist is too thin and her hips are too low maybe? It’s hard to tell with the action stuff covering it up.
love that last panel.
