Grrl Power #75 – At least sell ArcNuggets
I had this page written, penciled and inked when I realized I forgot to include Maxima explaining the “Archon” on the building. Luckily I had a big establishing shot of the lobby which you can’t see anymore. Well it’s not the last time we’ll be here I imagine. Plus now I can touch it up a little since my architectural skills are slightly less advanced that a kid with Duplo blocks. Not lego mind you. Duplo.
Getting all this explanation out of the way is going to make for a short press conference, or at least to the reader, since I’ll be able to sum it all up with a “One Explanation Later” caption. That actually makes for better pacing though, so let’s tell everyone who’s a new reader by then that I planned it that way.
Oh and Maxima covering up her face with her salute? That’s called poor planning. Learn from my mistakes. Also, drawing people salute is surprisingly challenging. Especially from that angle.
I know Sydney’s head looks weird on the first panel and I forgot ‘co-ed’s’ glasses, I’ll fix that.
SO the building would be an Arc Hive right?
Maby the Arc-Home.
Arc Nest, or maybe that should just be the name for the Ospry hangers?
how about simply the Arc. you know, like noah’s ark?
So long as they don’t call it Arc-Hole >.>
ESPECIALLY so long as they don’t shorten it in conversations to A-Hole :v
ahhh, Ascendant Archon, your spiels shall be missed if CoH goes down. :(
No, the ARC-hive is the library/backups eg the records division.
Yes, i did coin that term here.
Co-ed!Harem looks a little subdued. I suspect the General is still chewing out Punk!Harem and Arianna.
And Sydney – none of us are going anywhere until we see what’s in that tube. *Sets up chair, sits with folded arms*
No, Abbey just caught the tail-end of Maxi’s conversation, and her eye :D
She’s probably thinking “What did, or didn’t, I do this time?” :P
If you need some texts on Air Force matters, I would just Google AFI (which stands for Air Force Instruction) plus whatever you want to know, such as AFI uniforms. That should return the correct AFI for the subject. Or you could go to https://www.e-publishing.af.mil/ (the official database of instructions and other documents) and try to find it there, but it’s a little clunkier. The AFI’s normally come in 2 digit dash 4 digit designators like 36-2903 (which is the AFI which covers Dress and Appearance). If you need it for the Army replace AFI with FM (which stands for Field Manual) and that should get you the appropriate documentation for the Army, but they don’t seem to have a handy database of offical Manuals like the Air Force does.
if you goggle AFI you will get tons of results for the band of the same name
google army regulations if you need to a sub link to manuals should be there never needed the link myself.
agreed, you can certainly get hold of the regs that way, but I really wouldn’t recommend it – you’d lose an entire day (or more), and go crosseyed trying to decipher them… If you really have questions, just ask; there seems to be about a half-dozen-or-so military people regularly following, and most of us have pretty good perspective.
To all you, Salute/no Salute debaters out there, and an few other “here are the regulations”… This is a work of fiction…. therefore anything trying to tie it to real life…. is a waste of time… If DaveB want them to salute, dress x way, wear their hat/cover/beanie just so, so be it. I for one am going to enjoy the ride he is taking us on.
Well the world is fairly similar to ours. The only real difference is not only do supers exists, but they have for some time, though fewer of them and less well known about. Public awareness probably started a little over a decade ago, but there are still a lot of people that are skeptical about it. But basically it’s still our world as we know it, and I’m happy to take advice from people who know certain subjects better than me, military being a big one since I have no firsthand experience. Although I may use the “it’s a different world” excuse on occasion. :)
Sounds like you are getting ideas from x-men.
Noting that, even in our history, there have been lots of occasions where one can’t help but wonder if superpowers exist.
.. And I am not talking parapsychologically or mystically, either. Incredible feats of endurance, toughness, brilliance, etc.. Sites like ‘Badass Of The Week’ and ‘Cracked.com’ have some amazing examples of this.
full support to the doing it my way train when you want to and I believe we who spend time in camo just want to help with this worlds way for you to incorporate when you want. we don’t (or at least I hope none of us do) expect or demand you change what the comic wants to be just to match what people read this to find relief from.
Why not call it “ARC-home” maybe affectionately or seriously? I can see where certain supers in certain places could have changed a few things yet leave others alone. Like after the world wars. Would Spain still be fascist now in the 2000’s if Franco or someone else was near immortal ruled there with hand picked super soldiers? You see how that could tip the balance in things? You can minimize the changes anyway you want. But just a thought to be seeded in your brain to vex you.
DaveB said that there have only been a few in the last twenty years or so. Sort of like the urban myth thing. But lately a lot more have been showing up. Hence the birth of the Archon department of the goverment. So history hasn’t changed that much.
If I started developing super powers I would hide them. I rember watching the movie Firestarter and thinking that I would never want to catch the goverment’s attention if that was how they would treat me.
I second that. But your parents would have to help protect you if you have such powers at an earlier age than puberty. I don’t trust any gov’t in areas like that. But sooner or later they would find out.
i can’t find my copy right now, but i have a GN about what would Superman have turned out like if he WASN’T raised by the Kent’s out in rural Small-ville, but instead he was tracked on his incoming orbit, taken from them just a few hours after he landed and they were basically told “shut up if you know what’s good for you”, the spaceship confiscated and studied, growing up, his “parents” were under cover agents pretending to be nice when in his presence, but stereotypical assholes when they thought he couldn’t see/hear them… boy! was that different…
OOH! OOH! i got a name for the “not-so-super” artillery support troops: they’re the FLOOD-Lights!… and a ?squad? (?platoon?, Whatever the smallest unit of personnel will be called) those guys are SPOT-Lights!… and any Covert Ops guys are: PEN-Lights!…
yes, My tongue is firmly in cheek… :D :-)
I bow to your creative genius in the new angle on the arc theme
There was an old SNL where Kal-El landed in Germany instead of the USA so he was “Uberman” who was the example of the Aryan German an the Nazi way! Funny it was, with Dan Ackroid as Uberman an Michael Palin as Hitler.
I’m not sure if i have a copy, but i know there is one out there where Superman crashed just twelve hours later and ended up in Cold War Russia. He was brought up to believe that Communism was the right way and that Capitalism was the bad guys… though i think the publishers/editors (somebody) thought that the general comic-buying public wouldn’t buy it if it slammed the USA, so in order to make it a bit more PC, they had him “realize” that Communism wasn’t all that it’s cracked up to be… and that it can be just as bad as the so-called Capitalist Pigs that we are…
They did a spoof story of that in a book once. Written not comic, where he landed in 50’s soviet union and was raised on one of a farm with a big family, only thing is he ended up acidentaly killing off most of his brothers and sisters accidentaly by just playing around with them as a child. Talk about a kid not knowind his own strength! In fact one of his surviving brothers went in the milatary and was captured, and as they were torturing him laughed in their faces and said this was nothing compared to growing up with his little brother.
I once read a ‘What If’ where Superman landed in Britain a few centuries earlier. Cue the American founding fathers gathering to write the Declaration of Independance and getting the entire building carried to England then the ‘traitors’ publicly hanged. The last few pages were set in a version of Metropolis which was still in a British colony.
Thanks for the comic.
You know, the way the economy is some company could have built up one of those mall/office buildings that everyone is building nowadays, gone belly up and got taken over by this brand spanking new goverment organization that needed a regenal headquarters picked it up for practicly nothing, and it’s next to a milatary airfeild.
Not a bad idea in this econemy.
… Or any other time.
The only thing that would mess with a government body doing something so sensible would be the enormous volume of paperwork involved. ;)
I once worked for a branch of the Government that UN-condemned a building to use it as their (temporary) office space.
And there I was thinking the salute was her avoiding elbowing Sydney’s face in…
On the saluting uncovered/wearing a cover indoors: It varies by service. In the Navy/Marine corps you only wear your cover indooes if you are on guard duty, and never salute when uncovered. The “receptionist, if considered a Duty NCO position (quite possible) would be required to wear a cover, but wouldn’t salute an uncovered officer. In the Air Force and Army,, however, they do salute uncovered, so (Since Maxima is evidently prior Air Force) it wouldn’t be unusual for a special forces unit she’s involved in setting up would be more Air force oriented. The force the General comes from would also have a bearing. As far as the rank of the receptionist/Duty NCO: the position is usually filled on a rotating basis by members of the team. It could be a 1 month detail for 3-4 people, or a weekly duty, or even a daily duty, depending on the number of personnel available. The rank would depend on the average rank of the personnel, which is determined by how much training they need to get into the unit. A basic infantry unit, could have people just out of boot camp (E-2 or E-3 rank in charge of some E-1’s as patrolling guards), whereas a unit like this, that is made up of highly trained people probably wont have anyone below the rank of E5 – E6, so that would be the rank of the person at the desk.
In a word, maybe.
You poor man, you never made it out of Duplo, so sad.
was i the only one who noticed school girl harem didn’t have her glasses? and she has them on in the next comic thingy….yeah
I don’t know what you mean. ¬.¬
Actually, the thing I noticed most was Sydneys hair between the previous (splash) page and this one. It’s ‘normal’ on the splash page, even though it only reverts back to seagull mode in the 3rd panel on this page ;)
Arcsine – elite pathfinder squadron.
Arccosine – elite finance industry investigation wing.
Arctangent — elite political misinformation battalion.
May have to steal these. :)
From what I know, there is usually no saluting when indoors.
Why are Sydney’s glasses hanging so low on her face? How are they even helping her vision if they’re hanging in front of her mouth?… And they’d totally get steamed up there, surely?
She’s Harriet Potter Harry’s secret sister in the first panel!
ArcSWAT:
Specials, Weirdos, and Talents
Esoteric abilities and super-humans working with the Deep Black of the Occult side of espionage….
lmfao panel 4 sydney was copy pasted from the splash page
Ooo, just realised: Maxi is looking at, and talking about, Abbey in the last panel :D
